Dude, thank you! Thank you so much for clearing that up! Here I thought those muggers really were resisting. I have seen the error in my ways! You are such a genius! Only BJJ would think to use resisting opponents. What a novel idea! Now I know that when I got jumped, it was only a joke. They really went along with everything I did. Now I feel so bad about the pen thing!

"Now I am just a guy trying to be the best athlete I can...And it’s a whole lot more fun." Truer words were never spoken. It's amazing how many people just love those camouflage pants. Thanks for your post. |

Hello on the self defense not this saturday i took my mom to the emergency room because she wasnt feeling well while we were signing in i heard a noise and some ladies yell security. it seems some er patient took a swing at one of the nurses(didnt actually connect and he was probably strung out on drugs). i watched the nurses because from where i was i couldnt see him it took about 45 seconds to a minute and some seconds to get there. thats a long time point of the story is at any given time we may have to defend ourselves or someone else no matter how hard we try not to get into fights.

If you want to know if BJJ works in the street come to Straightblast gym. There are people there who would love to go out to the parking lot and "test" it out for you any time. In fact it is one of the requirements for being an instructor!

Straightblast Gym? Is that in Portland?
So instead of rolling on the mat, we go out in the parking lot on the asphalt and roll? Hmm, the only thing that changed is instead of me getting my ass handed to me by a GJJ specialist on the mat, it happens on the pavement, or the gravel, or on the grass in the park. That doesn't support the premise that GJJ is effective for self-defense. That does, however, support the premise that the guys at Straightblast are willing to beat you up in the parking lot for asking questions they don't like. ![]() So instead of falling back onto the age old argument of "my dad can beat up your dad" please refer to my original questions: Does anyone train primarily for self defense reasons? What arts do you crosstrain to achieve your goals? If so, what training methods do you use? Any 'real life' application training? Security, LEO, Hospital, etc... Thanks, SZ Last edited by Szczepankiewicz; 04-15-2002 at 10:13 AM. |

I found Straightblast on the web, but they are in Vancouver, B.C. Is this the gym you were talking about?
From what little I read, these guys train, and I found the phrase 'self-preservation', in realistic fashion using situational training, weapons, and mixtures of JKD, GJJ, and other arts. I don't think people are trained to shoot, grapple, and submit (ala sport jiu jitsu) in a self defense situation. At least I hope not. SZ |
