I don't think it's a jerk reaction of grapplers to take a fight to the ground. For example, judokas train most of the time to throw someone else to the ground and remain standing. In judo competition, if you throw someone, the match stops and starts back on the feet, and if you throw them squarely, that's the end of it. And in streetfights, the opponents are not usually formally trained, and though they'll throw some wild punches, they will most likely grab you as well. Standing grappling comes into play in almost every street fight.
Also, I think most grapplers train or have trained some striking art. It's not a question of whether or not striking is a good thing to have; most grapplers started in a striking art anyway.

Let's see. I'm a cop. A guy tries to take me down with a double leg. His two buddies try to jump on me also. They are all GRAPPLING with me trying to get me on the ground, take my gun and kill me. I wonder which I would rather know, a grappling art or a striking art?

To the Cop:
I would rather be clued in enough not to be grappled to the ground while on the job by three people in the first place. But that's just me. Yours truly, Joe |

stick your donut in one guy's face then squirt the jelly out into the other guy's eye! then you just look at the last guy and slowly growl: "C"MON!".

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! donut in the face that was good. HAHAHAHAHAHHAHA!jelly in the eye HAHAHA! Props, man, Props.
OH that killed me but I agree with Ravenman I wouldn't instinctively take someone to the ground and immediatly go down with him unless I was getting my ass whooped and I felt I was in a better position to defend myself and win the fight. Like Raven said I might throw him to the ground (and start stomping and kicking) but I wouldn' just unconciously fall and take a fight to the ground. I would either be goig down on purpose or losing my balance and just get taken down. BJJ, and all grappling, is just a part of fighting and to be complete you must learn it. Alone, yes, it is just a sport, but it is still a very effective way of fighting and could save your life.

I dont care what art you train in,NOBODY that gets jumped by 3 people is going to beat them up.Really for the street it would be better to train in Boxing and BJJ.So far this year I have seen 3 fights at my school (I wasn't in any of them)and none of them lasted over 25 seconds. The point is it's smarter to train in Boxing if the fight stays up but like most fights, after it goes to the ground BJJ is your only realistis option.
