Question

What do you guys think about the Wiles proof? Could Wiles have done it without Ribet's work on Taniyama-Shimura? Also, does anyone think that Pierre de Fermat's claim to have discovered a "truly wonderful" proof to be true?

Now that FLT has been toppled, what do you consider to be the greatest problem in Mathematics. I would vote for P=NP?

Didn't Captain Kirk solve this when he was in the StarFleet Academy ?

Fermat: the area of a right triangle cannot be a square.

Huey Lewis: it's hip to be square.

Wiles: the remarkable elliptical curve.

Jimmy Durante: "Boom! Pow! Look at dem curves!"

Tony, what do you think about the Goldback Conjecture?

A strange place to discuss mathematics - a MMA board.

The Wiles Proof is pretty much accepted as a correct proof of FLT. We could write for hours on the dependency of one man on another, I would give Riemman the nod as the guy who did the most foundation work to make these things possible.

His zeta function and the generalized L-functions were fundamental in the analysis of elliptic curves and modular equations, both of which are the foundation of the proof of FLT.

No, Fermat probably didn't have the proof. He claimed to have had the proof, but the margin of his page didn't allow for him to put it on paper.

That was not the only time Pierre pulled that stunt.

As far as the greatest outstanding conjecture goes, I would give the Riemman Hypothesis the kudos, which, as I'm sure you know, Beatle, goes something like this: the roots of the simplified Dirichlet infinite sum aka Riemman zeta function lie on a certain strip in the complex plane.

Do any of you mathematical geniuses know the reason that I gain 3 pounds when I eat a 2 ounce candy bar?

The only mathematical formula I know is when you are 18, 16 will get you 20.

And has anyone figured out yet why hot dogs come in packages of 10 and hot dog buns come in packages of 8? I asked before and never got an answer. That is a real enigma.

Judoguy: Carbohydrate storage in the body necessitates accompanying molecules of water augmenting the total weight. Hotdogs come in packs of 8 while buns come in packs of 10, BECAUSE THAT'S THE WAY IT IS. Glad I could help

Do you mean having sex with a 16 year old will get you 20 years? That is the only thing that makes sense even though it is not true.

Ah, Goldback's conjecture: if n is an even number greater than 2, then there are always 2 prime numbers whose sum is n.

Harry Nilsson's conjecture: One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do.

Two can be as bad as one, it's the loneliest number since the number one.
