It is true that TKD is not an effective as some others. In fact it is very incomplete. Today TKD seems to focus on high flashy kicks and not much else.
But if TKD only taught you how to kick good I think its worth it.

you should look up some real TKD. You'd be surprised.. Trust me, its not all kicks. Many of the kicks arent even high. There are also palm strikes elbows, some grappling and joint manipulation. The McDojang has tainted the name Taekwondo.
You just gotta fing a good intstructor who knows what he is doing. Many instructors add Hapkido to their curriculum which is great 'cause it adds more joint locks/manipulation, kicks, punches, throws and weapons.

It is straightforward, efficient and deadly. If you're looking to learn self-defense, don't study Wing Chun. It would be better for you to master the art of invisibility - Wong Shun Leung |

I agree with you completely. It all depend on which instructor you find. I was just making a generalized statement though.
Thanks and See Ya,

Hey, MinisterofDeath
If I were you I'd train in both Wing Chun and BJJ cause they're both very effective systems and both fill-in each other's range of weakness! And about how you're concerned you'll mix up the principles, well, I doubt that'd be a problem! For a start, BJJ is more of a 'use it the same as you learn it' martial art, with little to no 'theory' really involved. What works in free grappling and what doesn't is what matters. The only 2 real principles in BJJ are the centerline principle and that position is everything, and both those apply to Wing Chun in a big way too! That's my 2 cents... |
