just wondering if anyone here competes. I was thinking about competing, but the only ground experience I have is highschool wrestling. Soon I will start BJJ so i'm hoping it will be fun. When would you guys say is a good time to start competing in NHB type stuff? Any help would be appreciated. Thanx

I compete in sports Jiu Jitsu and have no desire to compete in NHB since I would get destroyed.
There is no time table to when you should start competing in NHB but I would wait a while. Since you have wrestling skills, it will make it a little easier but if you want to be serious about NHB, you need to learn a good punch and kick martial art too, along with BJJ. Since you have experience on the ground with wrestling, you need to focus on submissions. Learning to punch or kick is a lot easier (in my opinion) than vice versa to learn ground skills. If I had to guess, I would recommend that you wait 1-2 years before you compete, but it just depends on your skills. |

i already have stand up fighting skills. TKD and Wing Chun. The Wing Chun I just started but you learn alot in a short time. I havent done TKD in a while but I still remember the kicks (not flashy) and the strikes. When I do compete my stand up will probably be all Wing Chun.
Thanx man. anyone else? |

I was a hardcore TKDer then I took up muay thai. I compete in that, but I am taking it easy this summer cause my hand got broken.
I plan to continue my Muay Thai training in university and keep on competing.

I do not compete in competions. But I do fight in streetfights and challange matches.
As for NHB tournaments (which should really be called MMA tournaments), I say if your good enough your old enough. But thats not what you meant right.....Id say do BJJ for atleast a year before competing. That way you will have some skills you can apply.
