I know that karate, tkd etc. usually don't have a big place in the role of real life self defense, but I say never count anything out. Anyone ever taken shotokan and know much about it? How effective COULD it be for the street?
I can already see some of the comments this will raise. |

Aye yi yi yi yi.
My college has two karate clubs : Shotokan and Goju Ryu. I checked out both clubs. The Goju Ryu club was actually respectable with a lot of hard conditioning and sparring. The Shotokan on the other hand WAS HORRIBLE. Of course there was lots of useless kata and the class I sat in on the instructor was showing the students how to use slide-stepping in a fight. Uggggggggh !!

I see that you are a novice martial artist. With more research you will find that kata is never, as you put it, "useless" and that slide-stepping can be a very useful technique.
Remember, you must learn to walk before you run. I get the feeling you should take some kick boxing classes for your conditioning and sparring. In the mean time, do some research regarding the ART of Martial Arts and its history. |

With all my respects to Shotokan and Goju-Ryu, I think they're not street-savvy enough... The only style of Karate that puts u fighting hard is Kyokushinkai as far as I know... I've done all three of them, and Kyoku is just awesome.
I Feel for you... Think I love ya... Chaka Khan... Chaka Khan... Chaka Khan... LMAO |
