I wa just reading an article on the net, out of Black Belt I believe, and they were talking about shotokan on the ground. They were saying that shotokan emphasized the one strike method. They then said that it also contained throws, sweeps and some groundwork in case one strike did not work.
I am not trying to say shotokan is an ultimate art, just curious if anyone has ever heard this, or better yet, knows for sure about it. I do realize as well that each school may have differences in them. |

In Karate-Do KyoHan Funakoshi shows some of Karate throwing techniques. They range from Judo like throws to a big pile driver looking thing.

LMAO @ Bri Thai
Read the post man. I was curious about this because I read it and was unaware that it existed. Don't recall mentioning training in it. Nice assumption though

Yes there are definitely sweeps - they are also allowed in traditional Karate point fighting. And there are throws and locks. but none of that could be defined as ground fighting.
There definitely are people around who can fight, based on Shotokan Karate. In the city where I used to work as a doorman about 80% of the doormen came from Shotokan. I am not saying, though, that they were all the same guys who won the Karate tournaments. But there were actually dojos that managed to make good tournament fighters/players and good practical fighters.

Any "good" fighters around who train in shotokan are good in spite of it, not because of it....

Have any of you seen what karate is like in japan? Full contact, no pads at all(cup/mouth piece only). No punches to the head, only to the body. Kicks and knees anywhere. Clinching and throwing is allowed.
Sure, its not perfect, but its actually pretty good. Alltho karate in america is of course a sad thing indeed... |

Thats true sean, but its still mainly in japan. Most karate outside of japan seems to still be the wussy 'tag' version. Outside of japan for every full contact karate tournment you see, you see ten crappy tap tournaments.
