I believe it's alot like Aikijujitsu. I've seen A 6th degree Shorinji Kempo instructor teach a class and do a demo, and it is pretty much like aikijujitsu. He set up alot of his joint locks with karate type punches and kicks. Hopes this helps a little.

Blade, i used to do shorinji kempo over 15 years ago.
It depends upon what you are looking for ? All i can say is, it was definately not for me. If you want something that looks good but is not too real life oriented then i suppose it may suffice. It has what is called hard and soft moves, eg...punches kicks and then joint locks/throws. Also some zen type philosophies. We sldo had to all recite the rules of the phylosohies out aloud, and do some meditaion !!! The only bit i do actually find usefull, still to this day, is the ACU-PRESSURE.(similar to acu-puncture but usung hands not needles) But if you want to learn to fight, it's simply not realistic enough. some of the movesare very passive. We hardly did any sparring and when we did, it was frowned upon if we made contact, you had to stop and bow ! IN my book if i can punch someone, then they should bow to me and say "hey, thanks for showing me that my guard is totally inadequate" !!!! BUT SERIOUSLY, personally, i wouldnt bother ! I think i still have an old book called shorinji kempo that is no longer available,.........FROM WHAT I'VE SAID "IS IT ANY WONDER"? |

EITHER WAY, ITS NOT UP TO THE JOB. THE SO CALLES "SOFT" MOVES ARE VERY SIMILAR/SAME TO AKIDO. PUT IT THIS WAY I DID IT FOR A FEW YEARS TWICE A WEEK, but i was never happy with it. so i stopped and started attended thai boxing, which i immediately realised what i'd been missing. So to prove my point i,thought i'd do both at the same time and see what effect it had. Well after only a handfull of thai boxing classes, i suddenly found that my sparring ability AT SHORINJI KEMPO CLASS had zoomed up. And because i had improved so much, ALL THE SHORINJI'S wanted to try and defeat me. But none of them could , even the black belts. ON one occasion, the instructor decided to make a public spectacle of me !! So he got the whole class to sit down and watch. Then he said come on then, and he looked so confident, almost smug! But fortuneately i managed to get the better of him. But he wouldnt accept , and said "you got lucky" ! so he insisted we repeated it again, with the same result(lucky old me ). Now he begins to look a bit annoyed/embarrased, and says "again"(but this time he consults the his team of blackbelts for advice) So we do it again, and this time it's closer but i still get the better of him. The whole class was silent. Then he just stood there and looked at me, and i couldnt believe it as he turned to the class and said " although it make look like he's doing well, he's actually not using correct technique" !!!!! If thats what you want then fine, but like i say NOT FOR ME! |

I left these concepts behind long ago took what I wanted and moved on .Just brought up aspect to the kempo subject . I dont want to dwell in it You shamed your instructor in front of the class He will never forget. But hopefully he may open his eyes You could have walked away He would have saved face you had already gone beyond what he could do for you
