To those who like using the guard position, some thought provoking questions. Whats your strategy on using it against opponents who are versed in passing guard and also in obtaining posture from within the guard position?
Of course if your fighting the newer students its easy to get them in a sweep or submission but once they get good at posture or passing, the guard game becomes more of a challenge. How do you stay ahead of the game at that point? Any tips and strategies? This is mainly for Sport JJ. |

in combat or in sport?
In combat i'd get off the guard unless i knew he was a real weak fighter.. then i'd arm lock him.. other then that i'd fight him off preventing his fists or him attacking my nuts.. the other thing.. well.. old news.. i like talking about combat situations.. but people will reply

I try to avoid the guard whenever I can. I use it only if there is no other way out. When you find someone in your guard, it generally means your on the run.

well im not a jj fighter but i intend on bieng one and sometimes do submission fights (for fun with friends) and i had someone in the guard.... well he stood up to try and break it so i tried for a sweep, id seen it a few times b4 and gotten it to work once or twice... and right before he fell he leaned around and stoped my nose..... HOLY CRAP THAT HURTS, well we liked tha move so much that we started to play around with it and we realised once u have someone in the guard you can pretty much always stamp there face in.. so i dont use it any more

I've just been working on basics: simple stuff like arm bar, omo plata and triangle, choke and once the guard opens spider guard, sweeps, etc. Nothin' fancy tho.

There are several ways to break posture. Grab behind his elbows and pull, and even pull in with your legs too. When I rolled with Ryron at the Gracie Academy, OPENING his guard was complete hell. Base has a lot to do.
If a person gets posture and opens your guard, play open guard with them or something. Learning how to play the guard comes with one thing, MAT TIME.

watching kasushi sakaraba fight the gracies with him in their guard proved that the guard doesn't work in fighting.. unless your that good..
you just rise up and punch... muay thai works better on that note.. cause look at v. silva.. f.ucked sakuraba in the first fight..
