I took a chemistry class in undergraduate school called Organic Identification. In that class we were handed several substances, ranging from polymers to toxic waste to illegal drugs, and asked to identify the substances. One of these substances I analyzed was some LSD (D-Lysurgic metatartrate dimethalamide if I remember correctly--it's been a while). In any case, we ran several diagnostic procedures including NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) spectroscopy and found, in addition to the primary substance, that the following ingredients were also present:

- arsenic (a poison)
- benzene (a carcinogen, and a nasty one at that)
- mercury
- sodium saphorol (a substance that used to be found in root beer in the 1960s before it was classified as a carcinogen and banned by the FDA)

Presumably, these were by-products of the manufacturing process. In any case, one of the big questions about drugs is: WHAT ELSE IS IN IT?
