Default Powerlifters and Bodybuilders in NHB

How do you guys think powerlifters and bodybuilders would do in NHB? Guys like Dorian Yates and Magnus Ver Magnisson(sp?). Some of these guys are powerful as phuck!

It would be hard to tell because you don't know if those guys are tough or not, but if they are I think they could seriously hurt the grapplers. I don't care what anyone says, size, strength, and power play a HUGE role in grappling. It would be hard to arm bar someone with 27 inch guns! The strikers however I think would chop the big men down (Ruas vs. Polar Pussy) or just plain knock 'em out cold (Frye vs. fat Puerto Rican).

What do you guys think?

They may lose a lot of strength while developing enough stamina to compete with good wrestlers. I do agree with you that strength and conditioning may be the most important attributes of a good grappler. Frank Shamrock said that the best submission was superior conditioning.

Ayear and a half ago I tried to teach the really basics of NHB in a bodybuilders Gym; the owners were two brother really huge, around 240 lbs. To make a long story short they would check if I was good.

So we arranged to do a NHB match inside the aerobics room.

The room was crowded by gym regulars and the bodybuilder want to set all sort of rules; I cutter it short an let he wear whatever padding he would; while I would habe fought only with a mouthpiece. After awhile he showed himself donned like Yuri Gagaring before the trip to space: helmet, pads, he was covered everywhere.

The bell rang and I throwed a leg kick that didn't hurted hime; he tackled my shoving to the room wall, grabbing my waist. I rained at least 20 elbows on his spine and neck, and just when he started to release me I grabbed his head trying the big knee. The guy was smart and he grabbed my leag; we falled to the floor and I ended on gaurd: he somewhat mounted me but I clinched hard donning rabbit punches to the side of head. This drove him made and when he raise to land the big one I sweeped and reversed position. By the mount it was punch, elbow and headbutts festival; the guy gassed out and fainted.

The gym went crazy...

I've learned that bodybuilders are a little bit underrated; they can be pretty explosive and vicious at times: the real problem is in their stamina.

As far as Dorian Yates, I speaked with some guys that know him and he's real, real tough. He was the only BB that did cardio on the bag back in the 80s.

I think powerlifters would do better than bodybuilders. I think bodybuilders would lose a little more training for NHB than powerlifters. Really, either shouldn't lose any strength, or they're overtraining.

Excellent strength combined with good training would make them tough to beat.

Im a big guy(5'10",235#),and did a little NHB.I rolled once with a power lifter, about my size but immensely stronger. He wasnt that dangerous actually. He tried to use power when it wasnt neccessary, and gassed himself pretty quick. He got overconfident to,when he realized his strength advantige, and left his neck wide open for a crank.

I think that since I learned most of my fighting when I was much smaller I never was tempted to try to outpower the
guy,and was content to bid my time and wait for a mistake.I kind of wished wed really NHbd though,he was a sucker for punches.
IMHO,size speed and power are secndary to balance, conditioning and skill.

Cool

Magnus Vermagnason - STRONG AS HECK, GREAT ENDURANCE, but can he fight?

Dorian Yates - GREAT BODY, RIPPED TO SHREDS, but can he fight? No offence to bodybuilders (I used to be one of 'em), but some are total mommas-boys!!

Just because they can bench 400 - 500lbs, squat 500 - 1000 lbs etc, etc, doesn't necessarly mean they're cut out to do NHB.

If they were, don't you think they'd be doing it right now?

By the way - I'm not ONE of them MOMMAS BOYS I mentioned either. Some bodybuilders are tough characters - and some are not. Some just hide behind all that "sculptured fat".

Ronnie.

Default I didn't mean to imply they WOULD kick ass...

I hope you guys don't think I'm saying that powerlifters and bodybuilders would dominate NHB. I'm not. But......you never know.

rockinronnie had a good point, can they fight? Until one of them steps up to the plate (like Tyson and Karelin), we'll never know. But if any of these monsters got their hands on either a grappler or a striker, it's safe to say it's over.

I think there would be a big difference between a bodybuilder and a powerlifter. Bodybuilders train for looks, not strength. Powerlifters however, are not just strong, but powerful, in that the can translate that strength into movement. From what I've heard the movements involved in olympic powerlifting are faster than a boxer's jab. The powerlifters can also sprint faster than the fastest sprinters and jump higher than the best high jumpers. I think someone with the explosive strength of a powerlifter and some serious MA skill would whoop up in NHB. I hate to say it, but Kevin Randelman, who's built like a powerlifter, consisitantly wins, IMHO because of his build.

You're joking, right? Powerlifters are some of the most unathletic people out there.

That's okay. I already know what your Momma tastes like.

This freakin subject has been done to death so please book a ticket on the cluetrain.

When will people learn that strength is not an over-riding factor in MMA? We need an FAQ.
