Problem with karate is same as with TKD. I took shotokan karate for about a year and got some riducoulesly high belt. the point is they are in it to make money with all those fees for belts and stuff...Luckily I am taking a little TKD now on the side with muy thai and my instructer teachs the calss amazingly barely spends times on katas(although he does still teach them because they are part of tkd) and does a lot of slef defence classes. So if you find a good instructer you can learn any style very nicely and practicaly
