This might sound like the question every new person asks but it isn't, and i ask it anyway. I live in Liverpool UK and the martial arts lessons are few and far between. I have noticed people talking about brazilian ju jistu and othe martial arts that I haven't even heard of, but in liverpool, we only have the basic martial arts to choose from.
But what I really want to know is ... dare i say it, what is the most beneficial art to learn for self defense. The arts available are for example Karate, KickBoxing *(USA i think ) Judo, Boxing, tho i dont think thats a martial art. I havent found any taekwondo classes. Sorry for asking the same question but I dont have some of the martial arts available that you guys seem to.

Yeah peanut,
But blokes from Manchester are, how do you say, dodgy? Jonbid With the selection you provided, doubling up on Judo and boxing might be a good thing. |

Posting questions like that in a MMA/BJJ forum are always gonna lead to people recommending some kind of grappling. And I agree with the rest. Do some Judo or BJJ if you run across a BJJ school.
Boxing is considered a Martial Art. Atleast I consider it one.

He is a 34 year old man from Brazil who has studied his Fathers style of Jiu jitsu all his life. Gracie jiu jitsu. He came to fame in 1993 when he entered a no rules competition to determine who was the best fighter, all types of martial arts were competing with masters from Karate to Sumo to judo to ninjitsu etc etc. It was called the ultimate fighting championship. He was the lightest man in the competition which was bare knuckle, no rounds, no rules except for no biting and no eye attacks. It was a winner stays on format untill the champion was discovered. Royce won. He won the next competition, he won the competition after that, and helped to educate the martial arts world for the need to train reality combat which includes working from the ground. If you go to HMV you should be able to buy on video UFC championship 1, 2, and 3. It will open your eyes like it opened a lot of peoples eyes to the need to study all ranges of fighting, not just kicking and punching but also grappling. The UFC became popular and so rules had to be later introduced like gloves, rounds, no headbutting, no groin shots etc etc. If you can find a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class, go to Manchester for a day, you will be shocked at how easily even white belts with only a years training will totaly dominate a beginner of their own weight and strength.

The paragraph is mostly accurate. The highlighted portions are sections where I disagree.

Royce took UFC 1, 2, and 4. Was injured and unable to continue in 3. And forced a draw in the superfight of UFC 5.
Then, he took the money and ran! ![]() The Gracies are awesome fighters, but they truly excel in business. Now, if you truly wanna see a No Holds Barred fight, go to a soccer (Europeon Futbol) match.
