I train in Tenshin hyoho Soden Kukami Shin Ryu Bo Jutsu,

This mouthful is a traditional Japanese Bo art. Unfortunatley the school i train at is in the midlands (gloucestershire) so i think we are a bit far away. also the style is not taught in an open way and you will have to obtain a high rank in our jujutsu school first. (only 3 current students learn it!!)

My point is that there are very very few effective and authentic Bo Jutsu styles currently being practiced in the UK. (i am not aware of more than 2). There are however many many 'modern' interpretation arts, which have no real effectiveness or history.

If you see someone doing masses of fast swings and jumping around like a madman then the chances are this is not an efffective form.

The main things to look for are good coverage of the center line (during swings and when standing still), full use of the length of the bo, strike contact using the last few inches of the bo (where the most power is during a swing), bo vs bokken ( never seen bo vs bo in a 'real' school) and lastly a good history behind both the school and the teacher.

I know that some people learn modern fighting arts because they feel that they are adapted for the modern age, but with weaponry i would prefer something that is battlefield developed so traditional is best and most effective IMO.

Please also note that the average Ninjutsu school will also be modern iin its approach to Bo techniques, so be careful.

Hope this helps and doesnt disappoint you too much!!

cheers
Chris

No probs,

Yes my instructor gave a demonstration at Seni about 4 years ago. If i can dig out the tape i will try to convert it so that it can be viewed on the web.

Cheers
