Question aikido problem

I finally decided to start learning aikido, I felt really lost because of how aikido redirects an attack, while my basic instinct is to tackle an opponent more like judo does. My question is.... Is it better to redirect an attack, or confront it head on like like my instinct tells me?

I asked one of my friends the very same question. He told me that if I was facing someone twice my size, that was built like a brick sh*t house, would I rather try and stop his attack, or redirect it. I said stop it, but I'm not the sharpest fry in the deck.

If the larger person doesn't know what he's doing, and you have some grappling experience, I don't see why you'd get trampled.

There's plenty of Aikido techniques that do work. It's just the training method that doesn't work.

I don't mean to directly contridict you Mr. Poopy but, isn't the training method changeable according to the person. I've always thought that a person's training method should be customized for that person. Maybe the training method isn't good in an Aikido school ,but outside a martial arts school you can train the way that works for you.

I don't know much about Aikido, but if the training method didn't work for me I would change it so it does, then learn the techniques the way I want to learn them, rather than the way that specifically works for someone else.

I wish you luck with your studies ramus.

I understand what you mean. My old BJJ instructor has a friend that's been into Aikido for quite a while. He also teaches Aikido but he cuts out all the classic crap and teaches what works. He came into the class one night and tossed some pretty big guys around.
On the other hand, there's another Aikido school in town and the instructor probly couldn't fight his way out of a wet paper sack. And he does do all the classic crap.

I know what you mean about all the classic crap. A lot of people in my high school band (not that I'm in it) practically worship Aikido as the ultimate style. I try telling them that they are limiting themselves, but they won't hear of it and instead practice what they don't need. They say: "Well this or that technique doesn't really work for me now but I'll learn to use it." Can you imagine that! Molding yourself around the techniques, instead of adapting the techniques to fit you, just for the sake of learning those techniques! I personally think its utterly ridiculous!

Plenty of American Police study Aikido too. At my old BJJ club, there were 2 cops with an Aikido background, and the instructor had also done Aikido.

Go train at the yoshinkan hombu dojo for a couple of months and get yourselfty trampled, then come back to the conversation!

I am pretty sick of people putting down arts they dont understand! "its not what they do in UFC so it cant be worthwhile!!". hey, ill let you into something, UFC and ultimate fighting are fighting sports not martial arts contests!!

I have just got a video of Bruce Kumar Frantzis fighting 2 very high grade TKD instructors at the same time, Using only tai chi movements and they are helpless against him, they use kicks western boxing type punches any Thai style kicking and NOTHING works!!. I will try to put them in web format so you can all see that your limited knowledge of crap dojo's is not really what these arts are about!

Yoshinkan is a tough school of aikido and the senshusei course is one of the most intense MA training exeriences available today.

research will help those of you who do not understand these arts to open your minds.

Sorry about the rant guys but hey! I have proved many kick boxers, Judo players and the like wrong about internal arts, doing it with words is a bit harder!! I have studied these arts and found internal martial arts more effective even on the street.

Please be aware that these are just my findings and whether you would find the same is not for me too say.

I do not dismiss ANY martial arts a useless, they all have something to offer. To dismiss them off hand will cause you to be defeated by them, 'You do aikido? ha i will be fine then!' - maybe you wont!!!

Cheers
Chris
