Default Selfdefence/Shootfighting

Hello everybody! my first post.. I have trained Taekwon-Do before, but I'm moving to uni this summer, and I was thinking about taking up either Krav Maga or Shootfighting, or both! Any thoughts on this?

any particulare reason i should choose Shootfighting? Is there a lot of street/reality based training in shootfighting, or do they focus on sports/fights where there is rules? that is why i thought of Krav Maga, no competition/rules, just selfdefence, but then again, shooters have great groundskills and is good at striking too.. I want to be able to defend myself in a good/effective way out on the street, but i must say i like grappling too.. so, I'm a bit confused here

I just started training in Krav Maga, It is simplistic and brutal. The conditioning is very important and there is no sport in it what so ever. There is also no art or strategy in it. It is very straightforward and simple.

I personally don't like the system but I would imagine that it could be quite effective.

I'd try them both out and see which one you like better.

I'd try Krav Maga first because you will know pretty quick if you like it or not and then can either move on or stick.

Close call, but I'd take SF. More training with real resisting opponents. Notice I said more of it not that KM doesn't have it.

Exactly!

KM gives you simple pre-set reactions to pre-set attacks. If things go 100% your way great - you pull off your self-defense technique and walk away. But if your technique fails you're in serious trouble.

That said, Shootfighting is still a sport. It's MMA training, so it's a little more realistic as far as sports go, but you still need to supplement it with scenario training, threat recognition, adrenaline management, etc.

Interesting, the school that I am taking Krav Maga at I have not seen any predefined defense drills. So far everything I have seen has been spontaneous training.

I have been told that in a few months it the training changes to full contact sparring.

This has been my experience so far.

You will keep your hands up at all times. You concentrate on punches, low kicks, knee strikes and a simplistic type of blocking.

Once engaged you flow with the attack with overwellming force.

Conditioning is a major component of the training.

They do work on defence against punches, kicks, throws, and grappling.

Anyway, I still go with what I said earlier. Go try both and find the one you like. Schools are too different to judge them only on the style they are training.

Oh one other little thing. So far I have not seen any compliant partners in Krav Maga.

When they punch they try to hit you. You start off first day at about 20% power with punches to the head. And 100% power on the kicks.

The gear for KM is a bit pricey though. It is necessary though. I have well conditioned shins but I wouldn't want to take the shots to the legs without a little padding.
