whats your view on the "handicaped" and MA's

One of my instructors had MS. He often could not stand because of the weakness and balance problems. however he was sometimes able to spar and to do forms. He was a very good instructor and attained a fourth degree. He tested from a wheel chair. He was able to break 4 boards solid no spacers from the wheel chair. He also was inspirational to those of us who were not disabled.

I also had a student that had had a stroke as a child and lost some mobility and the use of his arm. He learned to adapt.

Some of these people are doing what some of us may have to do in a real altercation. Someone can take away the use of you legs, or your arms. Does that mean you give up?

If you only had the use of your mouth and you life was in danger would you not try to bite and tear away at your attackers flesh?

Part of martial arts is personal victory. You work to make the most of what you have. To improve youself and pray that if the time comes your training will be enough to save your life.

I had a student who had a heart condition that moved and went to a new school. I ran into him a few years later and he was very upset. The school told him he could not learn anything above his rank until he tested. The test was 4 hours long and non stop. Because of his heart there was no way he would have survived the test. But he could have done everything in the test over the period of a day. How stupid of an instructor to tell someone they must risk their life for a belt and never look at the capability of the student.

I've met more handicapped people with no physical abnormalities than I would care to recall.

i dont think anyone should have to do anything for a belt, what good are they? Only ego boosters in my opinion

i know of, and have heard of many people rising above there "dissabilities". The second most moving thing that i can remember right now is when i saw the double amputee who ran the 100m in the special olympics.....he lost his legs at the knee and with fake ones he can run it faster then most anyone legs or no legs.

It was realy just the fact that the demo that they showed for this guy was rediculous. I suppose theres no reason a person cant be a good fighter without all the tools that "regular" people have.

It was not just that he was in a wheel chair, it was that what he was doing obviously would not stop him from getting his arse kicked around the block.

I dont think we should humor people just because "there trying there best". Are handicaped people immune to the same types of attacks as regular people? no. So they should train to handle that to the best of there ability. If there not doing it, there not doing it, and when anyone does that, its funny.

It brings up all these "Should we tolerate the intolerant" philosophical questions, doesn't it?

And that post about "I'll poke fun at anyone". How wonderful. Why not find someone who has just lost a child and poke fun at them? Or someone who has found that they have cancer. Ho ho ho! Etc. etc. etc.

now you being prejudice and ignorant. Iv never accepted a steriotype about a dissabled person. i think a person in a wheel chair would be affended if everyone thought that they are in league with people who have lost a child or have cancer. i only pitty those who deserve/need it.

If a reg person does a dumb kata/self defence demonstration, that just wouldn't work, THATS funny to me. same person in a wheel chair? why should it change?

i may be laughing at them, but only because that single action....are people in wheel chairs imune to making funny mistakes? i hope not. Some people think that if someone has had a hard time in the past that we should mind our manners around them, be carefull not to upset them because there fragile self worth mite get a hard blow.

I think you took this TV show too seriously.
Most people affiliated with the Martial Arts would not think this guy was some incredible fighter.

Nevertheless, his demonstration on TV serves a purpose. It serves as hope and INSPIRATION for perhaps 1000s of others with disabilities. Of course, it gives him hope and a sense of PURPOSE which we all need.

I understand where you are coming from, but my advice is, let it go.
Let's say they have some guy on TV who only has 1 leg and 1 arm doing basketball demonstrations on how great he is. Now, would most of us think that he'd be able to play in the NBA? (That's the pro league in the United States for our Foreign members ;-)
Of course not! However, we ought to respect the determination that person has put forth. I am not trying to be Politically correct here, either.
Just think about how many people you see in everday life who have NO physical ailments and yet don't do Sh*t to keep in shape exercise!!!!!

I actually admire the determination these handicapped people have shown. People are depressed out of their minds after such a tragedy and if Karate, Kata, wheel chair basketball, (whatever) gives them purpose and hope, that's fantastic.

On a lighter note, I did see this crappy movie with Rutger Hauer who played this blind guy with a staff/sword who kicked everyone's ass. I thought that was funny...... lol

Tut tut Kingston. All that waffle about thinking first before posting. You may see the phrase "what a pair of wankers" in that post of mine you quoted. The "pair" part is a clue that I am talking to two people. The wanker that is you, and the wanker that said they would laugh at anything. Some people are paranoid, and think everyone is talking about only them.

And that part "if a person has cancer and makes a funny joke, its still funny" is true. But was the disabled guy joking about himself? You omitted to mention it in your first post.

I think people put to much thought into each type of minority. If someone does something great or foolish they should be viewed based on there actions not what there handicap is. We all have obstacles to overcome and some are greater than others. No one should be given pitty or looked at as a special case because the world does not adapt itself to that person. That person should have to adapt themselves to the world just like everyone else.
