like...what makes it different from ...HWARANGDO and TAEKWONDO

How long it takes to be effective is all based on the capabilities of the person. The average Joe could be street effectice in 6 months or less.

As far as HKD as compared to HRD and TKD. Well HKD and HRD are extremely simular. HRDs founder studied HKD under Han Jae JI. This is quite a big debate. My GM who knows Joo Bang Lee and studied with him says that they are exactly the same. Lee just decided to develop his own system and of course developed HRD to fit him and what is comfortable for him, just as all HKD practitioners are taught to do. Are they 100% the same? No, but then neaither is any HKD school really. The system is to Prgressive and ecletic to ever be unified and regulated. As for TKD, we are everything they are and more. Just becouse a TKD schools says they teach HKD doesn't mean they do. They may teach HKD based self-defense techniques, but they probebly do not teach HKD. We do not think the same way, move the same, or even fight the same. Traditional HKD doesn't even kick the same. If you are taught to snap your kicks then you are in a TKD influinced school.

In the past I have attended some Hap Ki Do classes and from my observations and experiences it is a very complex martial art.

A few of the defences that I can remember were extrememly complicated and involved several different stages (or moves). For example, one of the Hap Ki Do defences against a wrist grab is called "The 'something' (a Korean word that I wish I could remember!) Salute".

Anyway, this particular move would involved someone grab you by the wrist, then your response (as a Hap Ki Do guy) is to swing your arm up and over making a saluting gesture on the way. You then grab the hand with the other arm then use the first arm to "quickly" break the person's thumb. You then make a pointing gesture with your index finger (right hand) to direct your energy to where you want to throw the person. You then apply pressure and take the person down.

Ok, I know that there's no way you'll be able to visualise that from what I've written, but the point is that it was very complex- perhaps the most complex martial art out there!

To be honest, I can't imagine anyone being able to pull off the Hap Ki Do stuff off at all- at least not the things that I was "taught".

I know it's a cliche, but I believe that the best solutions are often the most simple ones.
