Whoa.............there.. I am not bashign muy thai at all I think it would be great for self defence on the street and its great to learn. But I myself would liek to know more kicks just to have them in my arsenal(its my personal preference and I would apreciate that you wouldnt just assume I that Iam saying its better self defence) So I was thinking what to take for this Hapkido or TKD? Hapkido also has great grappling moves thats why I waas thinkign of taking it but as far as I can see many ppl say bjj is better so I might jsut take TKD for kicks then add BJJ for grappling

I am with Bri on this one. Jimi you are gettin all sorts of excited about running away from a threat, but the fact of the matter is that you shouldn't run from danger,you should run towards safety. Also, Bri is right on the fact that "creative" things dont tend to work on the streets. Too many variables in the fight, and in the end the basics will serve you better. I have been in a few fight situations, and attempting creative strikes is alot more difficult than blocking- counterpunching with jabs/hooks. Leave the creativity to hollywood. As for the original question on gettiing better self defense techniques in the first place, I would lean towards JKD, however if you want to stay with what you know, I would stick with your sensei and see what he can teach you.

K thx to all who responed I appreciate the help and all the comments negative ones too I decided I am gonan stay with my master and take his self defence class taht has a really good work out and he says he teaches stuff there that he used when he was a bouncer and a bodyguard. But since Iam going away to college soon I am gonan take up either JKD or BJJ.

Oh yeah and another question. I know that thai kickboxing and American kickboxign are two different things/styles, but since I have only experienced thai kickboxing training I would appreciate it if soem one filled me in on what exactly regular kickbxoing emphasizes on and how is it different from muy besides the obvious no elbos and knees.

Hapkido can be a very demanding martial art. We have very physical requirements and are very technical. As well we are a complete system and our techniques at any range and area of combat are just as effecyive as anyone elses, and very practical. Give it a shot. If they give you a trial run then you have nothing to loose. Good luck.

Well different people have different motivations for taking a martial art. Some want to learn self defense and only use it when its absolutely unavoidable. Some take it for the sport. Then some take it further and have had past experience with assholes on the street and have decided to take a stand and not be a victim anymore. For whatever reason, we should accept all of these and respect others opinions. I think that anyone who gets to know me, will agree that the last thing i ever want to do is hurt someone. I am one of the most tolerant and peaceful guys out there and i do have a soft heart. But i also have a line drawn in the sand, and if someone crosses that line, well god help you

I agree that we should try to respect the opinions and reasoning of others. I also agree that there are times to draw a line in the sand and stand up for your beliefs. However, many times it's a good idea to cut your losses and get your ass out of there yesterday. Unless you have a major advantage, just hanging around to fight when you don't have to is not good for your health. Here's an example. Think of the FBI agents as "trained" fighters (i.e. a good boxer/martial artist).

When the FBI (or any other reputable law enforcement agency) takes action, they saturate. By this, I mean that they don't just send one or two guys to do the job. If they need to bring in 5 guys, they'll send 20 agents to go get them. But the FBI guys/girls are highly trained, so why would they do this? Because shit happens in real life that you cannot prepare for or foresee. By giving themselves a huge advantage in firepower and manpower, they minimize these unlucky occurrences.

The point is that it doesn't matter who you are or what you know, things can always comspire against you to make you lose/get hurt/die. That's why it's better to leave the violence to the times when it's absolutely necessary.

PS Bri Thai is definitely not a troll. He's British, but we probably won't hold that agiainst him
