I've taken a few months of the M.A. scene and am considering enrolling in a good BJJ school. Can anyone recommend any picks in the Toronto area? That's all of the GTA.

Joao Rogue taught/teaches from a club located off hwy 7
and just west of Younge. I checked it out a few months back.
It looked good but was very expensive. The club used to be called the Samurai club but I threw out the flyer and forgot the name. Not sure if they are still there though, or if Joao is still teaching. They also had some other cool
mma called combat Judo I believe and others. Worth checking out though.

I'm new to this forum, butit sounds like there's a few Torontonians chattin.... Maybe we could form our own club...

Cool Torontonians....

Here is a list I've compiled of MMA schools in and around the GTA. I'm not exactly sure if ALL are currently running, as I too have heard that one or two have closed or moved. Also, I can't really comment on exactly what is taught at all of these schools, nor do I know which is reputable, and which isn't. You'll have to do some investigating of your own.

JOHN PAULS School of MA - 371 Old Kingston Rd, Unit 4, Scarborough, contact John Paul Freitas, call 282-2585, email johnpaul@ionsys.com or master_johnpaul@hotmail.com

From what I've been able to compile, I believe there are two Team Impacts (please correct me if anyone knows any different).

TEAM IMPACT - Richmond Hill (my guess is this is the one at yonge st & hwy 7) Joel Gerson teaches judo, someone else may teach BJJ. I don't have an exact address, nor a phone number. I've heard that Carlos Newton drops by this school.

TEAM IMPACT - Apparantly this runs out of a high school in Pickering (Pickering High School?) Contact Stan Tzogas. Sorry, again, I have no exact address or phone number.

FAMILY SELF DEFENSE CENTRE - 60 Bullock Drive, Unit 3, Markham. Contact Ron Beer at 1-888-83SHOOT or email ronbeer@shootwrestlingcanada.com
This school is around the McCowan Road / Hwy 7 area.

BRAVADO JJ - 1 Ashbridge Circle, Unit 5, Woodbridge (Hwy 7 & 27 area). Contact Dan or Sil Moroney, 905-265-0950, email bravadojj@hotmail.com

REBELLION JJ (inside SIAM thaiboxing gym) - 680 Progress Avenue, Scarborough (between McCowan & Markham Rds). Contact Omar Salvosa, 289-9997.

SHAH FRANCO MA - 3385 Yonge Street (at Golfdale - between Lawrence & York Mills). Contact Shah Franco, 256-9952.

CANADIAN CENTRE FOR GRAPPLING ARTS - Pickering, Contact Darrel LeFrance (sorry, no address or phone no.)

KARMA JJ - 190 Marycroft (at Hwy 7) Woodbridge (sorry, no phone number or contact name).

K.A.T.A (Kombat Arts Training Academy) - Burnamthorpe Rd & ? (Rockwood Mall) Mississauga, Contact Claude Patrick / SLAVKO ILAC, 905-517-4440.

RUSSIAN MARTIAL ARTS (Sambo) - 11 Glen Cameron Rd, Unit 17, Thornhill (east of Yonge st, north of Steeles ave), contact Vlad Vasiliev, 905-881-4711, email vasiliev@cyberion.ca

MARK STABLES MA - 571 Queen street w (west of Spadina Ave), contact Mark Stables, 603-0924

MINORU MA CENTRE - 1290 Queen st w (west of Dufferin), contact Robert Varga, 535-0332

A BJJ club is supposed to be, or has already opened at 111 Byron Street S, Whitby (Joe Moreira Affiliate club?) Brock & Hwy 2 area (sorry, no club name, or phone no.)

My apologises for some missed information on some of the schools. I tried to compile as much info as possible, and I hope everything is accurate.

Ronnie.

Default Schools

Ronnie...

Thanks for going out of your way to post the list of schools. I'll certainly be looking into some of the schools on that list.

The best BJJ and MMA school in Toronto is Wagnney Fabiano Jiu-Jitsu, offering BJJ aka Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Submission Wrestling, and Mixed Martial Arts, with classes for children, teenagers, and adults. We serve the greater Toronto Area from 133 Turbine Drive off Steeles between Pine Valley and Weston. We can be contacted by phone 416-744-6868 or at www.wagnneyfabiano.com. We have a large matted area as well as a boxing ring.

Our head instructor is Wagnney Fabiano, the highest ranking and most accomplished instructor in Eastern Canada. Wagnney Fabiano is a Brasilian National Champion, Pan-American Champion and World team Champion in BJJ. He has won major championships in Submission Wrestling and is the TKO SLW World Champion in MMA.

Also teaching at the academy is Wagnney's brother Leo Santos, who in addition to being the top BJJ player in the world today at 160 pounds or less, is a 3x World Champion, Pan-American Champion, Brasilian National Champion, and a Bronze medalist at the 2001 Submission Wrestling World Championships. Wagnney and Leo's students have won many World Championships, Submission Wrestling titles and MMA matches.

Beginners are more than welcome, our philosophy is that everyone deserves world class instruction, regardless of age, gender, aspirations, or ability.

Josh, I can't really disagree about Wagney's being one of the top or even the top bjj club in and around the GTA because of his bjj credentials, but
I disagree about his club being the 'top' mma club. It's my understanding that mma has only recently been taught at Wagney's club (formerly Karma jj), like for about the past 6 months to a year, am I correct? The reason I say this is because I've never heard or read about an official mma class being put on there by Wagney until just recently. I know that Wagney himself is well versed in mma and has fought and is a champion, but how many others there (other than Bocek - and he's not always there) actually train right now in mma, have fought mma in the past or are about to fight in the near future? Other than Wagnney himself, how many past or current mma champions train there now?

My pick for best mma club in and around the GTA is Shah Franco Martial Arts. My reasons are simple: One ex-world UCC, and two ex-Canadian UCC champions; one fighter with an undefeated mma record (6-0), and many other amatuer and professional fighters training there presently.

Shah Franco's is good no doubt. But for MMA we have the best possible instruction. Wagnney has one student fighting for a UFC title on October 22, add that to Bocek, Claude Patrick, Leo Santos ( took Gomi to a split decision in Japan when Gomi was number one, and learns his Muay Thai from Pedro Rizzo ). When Carlos needed to train for Renzo Gracie, he was with Wagnney all the time. Shah's guys are good and Antonio might even be special, but they don't have any wrestling ( Sean Pierson no longer trains there, and Bruckman has his own school far away), and that is a key part of MMA today. As for striking we draw on a former Canadian national Muay Thai champ. And there is no question who has the edge on the ground, we have the all of the top submission wrestlers in the country from 145-170 pounds. If you want to become an A level fighter, you got to come here, if you just want to have fun we are also the most accomodating.

We are the best place in Toronto to train because our instruction is world class, and open to people of all ages and abilities.

When Wagnney is in Brazil he is training with Shaolin (who will also drop by to teach), Robson Moura, Joao Roque, and Loro, under the instruction of Andre Pedeneiras ( who will be in to teach here). Andre taught Tito Ortiz, Chuck Lidell, Shaolin, Charuto and BJ Penn during formative years of their training. Andre has more students in the top ten of their respective weight classes in the world than anyone. There is a huge difference between what Wagnney has been exposed to and can teach his students and that which exists outside of his club in Toronto.

I am not claiming we have the deepest room of mmaers but I 'd put Bocek or Leo Santos against any of Shah's 155ers, and Wagnney against any of their 145 pounders any day. This is not meant to disrespect Shah Franco's, it's just to point out the huge discrepency in terms of the levels of the top guys at each club. That said I am a huge Richard Nancoo fan.

Cheers
