Those two individuals are fighters so they have more than just a blue belt as well as other arts to draw from. But it depends on whi it is what they are teaching. A BJJ blue belt is not going to teach an advanced level.

Of course not, but he can teach you up to blue belt (someone superior to him will give the rank to you) and when you get blue, he'll get purple. When you get purple, he'll have brown already...

Sounds like a good theory but nobody progresses the same.

Of course your growth is somewhat limited to the growth of the instructor as he must get better himself to be able to teach you to become better, no question about that. But it still beats getting no instruction at all, IMO. You know the quality is at least up to some decent standards when you are tested by some black belt and you get your ranks from him. Even if you doubt your own instructor, you don't have to rely on his opinion on your skills when you want to test for rank. Who knows, maybe you get to be a brown belt before your instructor does, then you'll be the leader of the training group!

I trained in BJJ under a brown belt . At that level he was very good! He wore that brown belt for 3 years and barely got his black before I left. he was being guided by 2 BJJ instructors and his school is doing really good.

I'm a blue. I think an instructor who runs his own school should be at least a purple. The distance from white to blue is nothing like the distance from blue to purple. That's how I feel about pure sport bjj. My own training would definitely have not been as good if I had started by learning from a blue. I don't know how dispersed bjj has become, are there black belt run schools available in every major city now? If not, then a blue is better than nothing. I think a blue can help a white in class with techniques, but should not be their full time teacher.
But if it's a mma school then a blue belt with other excellent skills could be a good teacher and fighter.

Yes, a blue belt can teach some basic things to white belts and maybe some other blues, but I would not be confident any a blue belt that runs his/her own school.

A blue belt might know all the techniques that a purple belt knows, but the purple will probly give a much better quality of instruction.

I've rolled with so many blues and hardly ever felt outclassed unless it was someone on their way up.
Every purple I roll with basically plays with me. There is no comparison. They use no strength, they pick at my sloppiness, they easily take advantage of my mistakes, they wear me down, and they frustrate me. Then they smilingly tell me that I'm "doing well".
