i had a nice encounter with this fella here.. he was ofcourse a spec. op.. trained with the best.. one of the 5 top in the US.. and he had a 6. dan in ruy karate (weirdly enough, when i asked about how his grading was, he answered with a lot of crane and dragon kung-fu forms..) and ofcourse, he was a dear friend of mezger and rutten... hmm.. and so on.. quite nice:P

What was the name of this fellow
Ryu karate is nothing, ryu means school and is placed behind the name, for instance Itosu ryu, motobi ryu or wado ryu(last one is actually a ryu-ha)

No dragon forms in Karate, there is one craneform though

How old was the guy anyway? for 6th dan I would say in his 40's

I have meet alot of people who watched a couple of training video's went to a hanful of classes and then tried to sound like they were dan ranks so they could bluff there way around. I usually nod my head listen to them talk (trying not to laugh) and then invite them to do a seminar at our Dojo and watch them stumble on there words trying to explain why they cant do it

yeh there are tons of people around with this severe lack of knowledge! and a major EGO PROBLEM!

Makes me laugh when they come out with completely incorrect information. I do the same, just smile and say " i dont know too much about it". Let them stay in there little world if they want!

about a month ago we had a guy who came to our school and wanted to train. My Sensei welcomed him in and had me warm him up. When I was talking to him I ask him if he is familiar with any kind of martial arts and he said yes he had studied kung fu.
He then went on to talk to me about every Jet li movei in the world and about all the cool stuff he did and ext.. ext... Everytime I tried to show him a basic escape he would go off again about how jet li did a move just like that and on and on.
To finish up the story. Sensei finally took over and warmed him proper and after about an hours worth of pushups for talking over Sensei the guy went to get a drink and never came back.

I've encountered one or two of those type of people. Posers really do my head in.

I was at the gym waiting for the circuit training class to start last night, and there were a bunch of people that I didn't know that have done a bit of karate or kickboxing playing around with a punchbag. Most of them had this, "hey, look at me" attitude. When they finished on the bag, I went up and decided to throw a few boxing combos and straight blasts (jik chung chuie) at the bag. As i was working out on the pad, I heard one of them make "Bruce Lee noises" in the background, presumably aimed at me. I was going to throw a few Thai round kicks on the bag, but I decided to stop in case they decided to "judge" me.

It really pissed me off though. Being Chinese and training in the martial arts can draw attention to yourself at times, especially in places that contain posers.

hey swan. I wouldnt let them get to you. Being a chinese martial artist just makes it so ignorant people arnt stereotypeing you wrongly. . And I wouldnt let anybody judge you. you are who and what you are no matter what anybody says or thinks

A couple of years back, just after the whole "crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" fiasco died down, I had a Chinese friend from Shanghai who was approached by some guy who asked her (completely serious) if the actors in that movie were really flying....

I shit you not.

She told the guy "of course not! It's movie stuff."

She was telling me all about this, and I told her she should have told the guy that they actually were flying, and that she could fly too.


Stupidity knows no bounds. Really it doesn't.

Again another reason why I now hesitate to talk about martial arts at work. Most people in the office work world have small minds (especially in Texas) that usually revolve around their desk.

I've met a poser before. He was a huge liar. I met him on the internet and then in person to roll with him. For some reason he had a black belt and all kinds of grappling gear. It was weird that he would have all that stuff coz he couldn't grapple at all. He told me before that he'd been grappling for 10 years and had attended a number of Gracie siminars but when it came time to roll I totally dominated him.

In my hometown, we have a guy claiming to have learned kungfu from his dad, he is a guy from suriname and if you calculate back , he dad can't have learned uch since the chinese opened up much later than the japanes arts
On top of that he claims to be a worldchampion
In the past he he claimed he and his friend were the only ones to be send to the WC pentjak silat, when he came back he claimed he had won and was the WC, posing in the local newspaper with a huge trophee,, now 1st they were 2 people of a complete delegation of dutch people 2nd he didn't win even a medal, on the video of the finals you see him sitting on the side with a sad face
Stupid thing is, this guy isn't a bad fighter at all, I've seen him fight a savatefight and do a jumping turning backkick and knock out his oponent
But he was and still is a real poser( again I hear his students say he claims world championships)
Last example, summer, training in the park, when others were training he would train in the vacinity(spelling?) showwing off but two can play that came, when my assistend and I were training there, he would move to the other side of the field and we weren't showing off, just training for a demo so a lot of repetition

next time attack them and beat them all up/kill them all. some training in machine-gun-do should help

i have to admit there is a certain "dont attack that chinese guy, he might know kung fu" attitude, probably caused by small minded people watching too many kung fu films

how do you know people in china caNT FLY? it could be a big conspiricy to cover it up. "but i saw them on wires" what if the wires arnt attatched to anything? makes you think

LOL!!! You know the Green Destiny sword? Well, that was handed over to me! I was going to use it, but I left it in the car!

You've got your facts wrong. Chinese people can't fly...we aren't supermen! We can only jump a few thousand feet and defy the laws of gravity like we're on the moon. Its the art of Anti-Gravity-Kune-Do.

I told that this whole story to my friend, and he suggested I say, "In Hong Kong, you'd be dead!" (from Jet Li's character in Lethal Weapon 4) and then see what they say!

Not very good at banishing any Chinese stereotypes that are around, but it would be funny!
