Against beginners I can acquire the closed guard very easily by jumping into the guard as their waist is usually open.
However I would like some ideas on how to lead an advanced opponent into the guard. these are people who usually protect their waist area or leave one leg up ready to pass the guard. I find I cannot make it to the guard with these people. Then I end up in a bad position and have to escape. Now sure I can try takedowns etc instead of going to guard but that is not my issue. I'm looking for any tricks on how to bait an opponent to enter the guard! thanks Last edited by GuardMaster; 04-04-2003 at 11:04 AM. |

After watching BBC America and British 'Comedy' on PBS, reading your posts and those of your countrymen, and meeting several Citizens of the Commonwealth nations, I can truly appreciate your opinion on the matter.

Against a more experienced person, you're gonna be on the run if you put them in the guard. It will only be a matter of time before they pass and you end up in a terrible postition.
You always want a top position unless you know you outclass your opponent.

Some have said that the guard is not the place to be. Sure if you have a lousy guard you don't want to go to your back. But my question qas specifically ways to enter the guard not whether its the place to be.
So far I got one response on this : push them, when they push back, pull guard. Any other takers? BTW I remember a previous instructor of mine from Samurai Club in Toronto Canada. He had an awesome guard, finished 95% of his opponents from it, and each match lasted less than 60 seconds. So I have a totally different outlook on guard, to me its not a position of disadvantage especially in a grappling match (i..e not NHB fight). |

Guardmaster, I've seen a bunch of your posts and you seem bent on becoming a good grappler solely through being good at the guard. I don't think that works, you need to be more well rounded than that.
Even someone with a killer guard like Barret Yoshida has learned and mastered all the other positions. And he could easily tap 99.9% of the population by pulling guard and getting them. But anyway, to answer your question, there are certain people who are thinking ahead and when you try to pull guard on them or when they take you down they are already taking steps to avoid the closed guard. But you can still get an open guard or half guard against them if you are moving your hips well and not lying flat. You are so limited if your goal is to begin every match with your opponent in your closed guard. It's very rare that someone has taken me down into side mount, and if that happens it means I made a huge mistake while they were taking me down. |
