hey guys ...I've been training BJJ on and off for a few months now and I think I might have to call it quits....
Thing is, I am a professional musician (guitarist) and my fingers are getting really stiff after training cos of all the gripping etc.. sure my grip is gonna get stronger ... but all the dexterity in my fingers for playing guitar is going!! This is a really tough call cos I LOVE training .... Maybe I'll just stick to no gi training? there is less demand on the fingers there.. I train Muay Thai as well so maybe I'll just do that..... But I want some ground work too dammit!! Any ideas anyone??

spend more time after working out and during the day on finger limbering exercises.
Not sure if this might help but maybe one of those heated oil things to soak your hands in.

If you're a REALLY GOOD guitarist, then I would consider quiting. If you're a mediocre guitarist who just wants to play a few gigs, then keep rolling... I played guitar for a while too and with 3 broken fingers that never healed correctly. That which does not kill you can only make you stronger... Therefore, do what you feel is right for you.

well...people say I am considered to be one of the best guitarists in Hong Kong ( doesn't say much tho!) Music is my life ...so yeah its very important that I keep my hands in good shape!
It is somewhat harder to move my fingers on the fretboard after training... but maybe thats cos I dont roll enough and my hands aren't used to it? - classes are at night and I usually play gigs at night so I cant go to BJJ that regularly... I'm leaning on just going to the no gi classes.... see how that goes...maybe that'll work.... Anyone here suffered any really bad finger injuries??? - stupid question for BJJ.. but I wanna know! oh and thanks for the replies!

One thing I would recommend is to take out a good disability income insurance policy if you do continue to risk your hands in martial arts. They are usually inexpensive and will provide income incase you do damage your hands and are unable to play.

I must say that I have seen quite a number of injuries but cant recanl many with fingers !
perhaps you have just strained them, but your hands will adapt and become more accustomed to it the stresses and strains. I remember I had awful back probs for ages when I started bjja. And perhaps like your fingers, I never really let it recover and would just carry on going training, therfore making the prob worse. Could be the same with you ? Try not to use so much "force", when you train, everyone does it but it is used as a substitute for lack of technique. The better your technique the less force/aggression is required, so the stresses on the body are lessened. So....as they say........... "may the FORCE not be with you" !!!!

Quit and find another hobby you love. If guitar is what you do for your life then training grappling can't continue. The more often and longer you train your chances of injury drastically go up. You could hurt your shoulder, arms, or even your hands and fingers. Broken fingers don't often heal to the way they were before, I've seen some screwed up looking fingers that are healthy and healed, but were broken once. Stop training right away.
