Clinching wrestlers is not smart unless you have the skills to stay on your feet.
Definitely agree. I have some luck when I can throw a quick knee or elbow, but a lot of time time, I end up sprawling when they try for a single leg or an ankle pick. I always found it tougher to clinch wrestlers because they don't open themselves up with strikes, and they spend all their time working there. Fortunately, most of them don't have any finishing skills other than pins (most of them).

The thing about the blast is that you've got to time it correctly, and have some decent power behind it
I figured this is the reason a lot of people are switching to the 'boxing blast.' That rolling the fists stuff doesn't do anything. Do you feel that the speed you sacrifice with the boxing blast makes up for the added power? I feel like it would, but I've haven't worked it much.

DRLashambe,
Do you mean trapping as in Wing Chun traps, or trapping as the range that encompases the clinch? WC/JKD traps need a reference point, and if you don't strike, you don't give one out. Try making them swing at you so you can find an opening--like a BJJ player would do to a boxer. If it's a hook, you can move in and jam. If it's not, a slip/parry is fine. If you can take a hit, then just keep moving and smother you way into the clinch range. I've had success with these methods. To be honest, Ryu or Terry would have better answers. A lot of the stuff I train revolves around scenarios that start and end at close range. This doesn't leave a lot of room for fancy trapping and squaring off.

You can have all the tools in the world, but if you dont know how to apply them,
they are worthless.
This is true, but nobody said any different.

Ryanhall you say
"WHO SAID ANY DIFFERENT"

WELL, TRY READING THE ORIGINAL QUESTION.

Its says what tools do you need to become a good fighter.

The elimination of an important dimention,
(having the ability of "application")
IMPLIES, this has been disregarded.

As good as someone saying "DIFFERENT".

BY DEFINITION IT IS "DIFFERENT",
FROM MY STATEMENT.

Like having a big gun,
but not knowing how to load, aim or fire it !!!

Or having no water in your water pistol !!!!!

No spud in ya spud gun,

no glue in ya glue gun,

no staples in ya staple gun,

GET THE IDEA YET?

OR SHALL I PROCEED.......

NO TOMMY IN YA TOMMY GUN......ETC, ETC

Your body type, strength, speed, size, and preference will dictate the tools that are effective for you. The basics are always best.
