Northern Kentucky MMA Show Promises
to ‘Get MidEvil’ On Fighters June 7th MidEvil’s Mayhem Takes Newport By Storm- High Hopes for Sequel By Larry W. Wical It’s a not-so-typical weeknight, and Newport, Ky. native Adam Brown is doing his best to prepare himself for mayhem… literally. MidEvil’s Mayhem, Brown’s new mixed martial arts show that debuted in April to a packed YMCA in this Greater Cincinnati-area city, is only days away and there is still much to be done. There are fighters to train, sponsors to court, fans to draw and a neighborhood to prepare for the war of reality ring combat; and as a robust 5’7”, 214-pound jiu-jitsu artist, his own training cannot be neglected either. Pinning Brown down is not an easy task, neither literally or figuratively speaking, but he did have some time recently to discuss the labors of his love for mixed martial arts competition, as well as talk about his upcoming MidEvil’s Mayhem 2 show which takes place June 7th at the Newport YMCA. WICAL: Adam, dealing with MMA fighters on a regular basis has become your passion, but you’re a pretty big guy in your own right… What martial art do you study? BROWN: “I’ve trained in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for about six years - I should be a blue belt but never tested. I trained with a few purple belts, Shawn Hammonds, Bryce Moore and started with a guy named James Spencer.” --- WICAL: You have a very obvious love for MMA events, shows and competition… So tell me, have you thrown your hat in the ring and bruised your knuckles in any amateur or pro MMA events? BROWN: “I fought in NHB shows in bars and clubs, but they were never as organized as the shows that I see and promote today. The shows that I competed in, you always had somebody that won the week before and the announcer would have to call challengers in to fight. I was 7-0 before I stopped competing. I won the 2001 Jiu-Jitsu Championships heavy weight division, and I came in second place in the 2001 Kentucky Karate Championships - Jiu-Jitsu division. The guys I competed with back then were no challenge for the guys who are competing today, though.” --- WICAL: As a grappler, you could no doubt push some people around in the ring, but have you had any interest in teaching aspiring fighters for MMA events? BROWN: “I was never really a teacher, but I’ve trained and given people a place to train with me if they had the skill. If they had no skill, I would show them everything that I knew, and we just went from there. I did other forms of martial arts. I was in a bookstore, and picked up a book called, "Black Medicine,” the art of death. I started studying that book and added it to my arsenal. I picked up weaponry skills, like throwing blades, knife fighting and stick fighting. I tried to mix it all together. ‘If you are going to be a weapon, be the complete weapon,’ and that is what I try to do. Knowing all this now, I have no interest in competing or street fighting anymore. If you came to Newport and asked anyone here, they would tell you that I've been in over one hundred fights. Some people think that I'm 6'3”, 250 pounds, but I'm only 5'7”, 214 pounds. And it's funny because when those people meet me for the first time, the first thing that they say is, ‘I thought you were a lot taller than that.’ When I was younger, I use to get pushed into fights a lot because of my height and build, but I was always a strong kid. That got me into fight after fight. Challengers kept coming and as I was getting older, and I had to find another way to defend myself. That's when I came across jiu-jitsu and started destroying these guys with it… after a while it all stopped.” --- WICAL: Your organization, along with the growing MMA organization in Middletown, Oh., are steadily building the Greater Cincinnati area into a budding MMA base for the future. How did your organization evolve into what it is today? BROWN: “MidEvil Productions was supposed to be a website about underground fighters, and certain events, but after seeing a few shows I said, "I can do something like this," so I went to a local show in Middletown, Ohio. The organization of the show blew me away, everything went really smooth and sounded like it was professionally done. At that same show I met a guy named Dustin Ware, who I think might be the best match-maker in the business. He put together the fights for my first show and that's the key to it all. You have to have a damn good match-maker to hold a damn good show.” --- WICAL: Running MidEvil Mayhem events must eat up a chunk of your time, so you must have had a plan in place. Once you decided to begin running MMA events, what steps did you take to see the process through? BROWN: “I put up the money from my income tax return, which was about $2,500 and then found a venue, arranged the advertising and just put the money into it, period. Dustin put together the fighters and did the advertising over the Internet. I have guys waiting to fight in MidEvil’s Mayhem from France, Brazil, Holland and some from the U.S. West coast. My phone rings non-stop everyday with someone wanting to fight in my next show. My first show (MidEvil’s Mayhem 1) was a big success. I think I found the best man for the job in Dustin. Newport was very supportive in letting me bring the first MMA event to the Northern Kentucky area being that it is a city on the rise. The city is trying to build, and the more entertainment, the better for this city.” --- WICAL: Word is you’ve got some pretty tough fighters chomping at the bit to fight in your ring. What fighters have you seen at Mayhem that you foresee doing very well in the future? BROWN: “Chris Wells has unusual strength and I say if he touches up is boxing game, he won't be stopped. A guy named Lloyd Irvin brought an arsenal of fighters to my first show and he had a fighter named Mike Easton, who was a monster in the ring at 145 pounds… I can't really see this kid being touched by anyone. Also, there’s a fighter named Josh Saunders who is a complete fighter with good boxing, grappling and kicking skills. He can use a variety of skills to beat his opponent. He’s a very strong kid, and I can't wait to see him get into the ring again.” --- WICAL: One last question and I’ll let you get back to your busy schedule… how well-received was the first MidEvil’s Mayhem show, and what’s the plan for the upcoming June 7th event? BROWN: “We sold about 475 tickets for MidEvil’s Mayhem 1, a very good turnout for my first show - my goal is to take all of this over. For my next show, we have three championship titles, and for each title there will be a four-man tournament for each title and the victor wins a championship title belt. Plus, we have three or four undercard fights. If part one tripped y’all out, part two is a gonna’ be a mutha!” Interested in learning more about MidEvil Productions?
