People always prattle on about learning to do a technique. When they can do it, they move on to learn another. This goes on and on until the know how to do a great many.
But they don't know how to APPLY any. If you want to learn how to keep yourself alive when under attack become expert at applying a very small number of attacks. Being able to do a thousand will lead to your downfall. Oh yes. |

I totlally agree. See my post on what is Kenpo thread. Basically there are so many different self-defense techniques that it's hard to be good at any of them.
I just have a good solid core of them not many and I can use them very well.

This is an excerpt from my post on kenpo.
Both Chinese and American kenpo/kempo are heavy into self-defense techniques. I cannot vouch for American kenpo but I did study Chinese kenpo and it has a huge amount of complicated techniques For 1dan you have to know some 300 self-defense moves that you have to know both right and left handed and for each there’s a,b,c,d,e versions of them. American kempo isn’t so bad, Ed’ got rid of a few. Anyway it takes a long time with lots of study to even get the basics. Once learned if learned well (could take a few years) it is pretty effective for self-defense. I personally don’t recommend it, But this is my opinion. I took it for 2 years and I still wasn’t very good at the techniques just because there were so many to learn. It was very frustrating to say the least. The only reason I kept with it for 2 years is the school I was at also taught arnis/eskrima which I really did love. They wouldn't let you take just the Arnis/Eskrima without taking the kenpo.

I completely agree, you need to have a small number of techniques that you know how to use effectively. But you need to have some knowledge in each range. At the very least you should know a technique to help you get out of a range you don't like.

Know the technique
Know how to apply the technique in a tense dynamic situation Know when to apply the technique Mr. N, you have Lizard's buy in. That's 1/2 of what you need! |
