Default Stepping strikes

I've been thinking recently about how different styles have different attitudes to stepping while striking. For example in boxing the idea is that you keep one leg forward and keep it there, you can throw lead hand punches with one arm or rear hand punches with the other. In many traditional martial arts you have one leg forward but you can step so that the other leg is forward. Boxing uses a lead hand punch and a rear hand punch, karate uses a stepping lead hand punch and stepping combos (like a stepping lead hand block followed by a rear hand punch). I have been thinking about how different combinations of these could be used like: If a style used only static lead hand punches and stepping lead hand punches or if a style only used rear hand punches and stepping block/rear hand combos. What about back steps?

The same can be said for leg moves, do you put your foot back where it started, step forward to advance on an opponent or step to the side in preparation for another kick? Do you switch stance to hit with the other leg? Do you use lead leg kicks?

In matches almost no karateka will do a stepping punch (oi zuki)
instead they will lunge foreward to bridge the gap using the frontfoot

Oh by the way the badly trained karate place, I saw them doing pad hitting and some sparring . But I also saw one guy doing lots of little snapy front leg kick combos, thinking he's a fighting machine, I'd love to fight that guy, throw him to the floor and drop knees on him! BUT I DIDN'T FIGHT HIM BECAUSE IT WOULD BE POINTLESS AND I WOULD HAVE LOOKED LIKE AN IDIOT.

Sorry skitzopangwilax, I have now deleted the style vs style part of this post. It never existed. The purpose was actualy to comment on the fact that each style does have some things that the other style lacks. But you're right, that belongs on another thread. You know I used to say your name as skitsophenix.

This started out to be a good thread and then you dragged it into yet another style vs style.....

How sad.

Its been my experience that people who really want to fight do! They don't run to someone / place thats safe and tell them how bad they want to fight.
Geez Lizard if you really wanted to fight so bad why didn't you just kick his ass?

Yeah, those polysyllabic words used to kick my ass too.

Regarding footwork, there are those who stand still to strike, those who step with the opposite foot and those who step with the same foot as the striking arm.

And of course there are as many different theories of these three categories as there are styles in general.

I think it depends wholly on what you are trying to accomplish by your footwork.
