Hi,
If anyone in Houston needs a college PE credit I'll be teaching a martial arts course at HCC Central Campus Fall 2003. Beginning July 7, you can register online at http://www.hccs.edu. The Course Number is 76731. It will be held on Tuesday and Thursday from 11:30 am - 1:00 pm. I haven't decided on the course textbook yet but I'm leaning towards Mastering JuJitsu. If you have any questions about the class, let me know. Tim |

Is this an entry level class or are you dumping people right into the deep end?
Mastering would be good for advanced students, it might be a little overkill for beginners, maybe? Perhaps you could go with BJJ Basics from Simco? Either way Tim, let me know how it goes. I am really interested in how you are doing this as I'd like to follow suit here at our University. Regards, Spanky |

Hi,
Have you seen the book Mastering JuJitsu? It doesn't have very many techniques in it and the techniques it does have are fairly basic. I think the strong part of the book is the text. It would be easy to cover that book in one semester with even the beginning student. The book also offers a lot that all levels can learn from. I started teaching the college course in '92. I used to use "Jun Fan/Jeet Kune Do: The Textbook" but am now looking for a change. The class has always gone very well and enrollment has been good in the past. What university are you teaching at? I am trying to set it up so that my instructor can teach at Boise State University.
I hadn't seen the book you are going to use. With a title like 'Mastering' I would expect some pretty heavy duty technique. ![]() How did you initially set up the class? Did you focus on 'Self defense' techniques or did you focus on the foundational techniques of JKD (or a little of both)? Semester length is 16 weeks. Generally you either get the students to attend once or maybe twice a week for only a semester. What kind of stuff do you add in and what do you leave out? I study with the Judo coach for the BSU team so I can get a good insight into how this particular university does it, but I'd like to see how someone with your experience sets things up. Regards, Spanky |

Kicks - round, front, oblique, side stomp with a defense for each Punching - jab, cross, hook, uppercut with a few defenses for each Trapping - elbow, knees, foot stomps, basic methods of trapping or pinning opponents arms Grappling - a few basic takedowns, armbar, triangle, chicken wing, 4 leg submissions, etc... We spend the last portion of each class on some type of conditioning - thaipads, focus mitts, or very controlled sparring Make sure before approaching Boise that your instructor has a properly prepared syllabus, midterm, final, etc... If the department head sees that he has everything prepared they will be more receptive to incorporating the class into their program. Hope that gives you an idea. If you have any additional questions, let me know. Tim |

Szczepankiewicz - you're welcome
Tom Yum - I teach full time at HCC so I won't have time to offer the course anywhere else. If you wanted to take it at HCC you could transfer the PE credit. Tim |
