I never liked the ridge hand. Too easy to pick off, too prone to injury, and not enough power when thrown without telegraphing. Same thing with a backfist. I'd rather use a hook punch or a power slap. But that's just me.
Very questionable on conditioning too. Other than calouses, I don't want to be conditioning my hands. I'd rather not have the onset of arthritus at age 30.

I think someone said in an earlier post that the problem with throwing a punch can be getting your knuckles caught with an elbow or headbutt (hard part of the head). I saw this happen once on accident in a street fight years ago. One guy was coming into punch and as a gut reaction (I guess that's what you call what he was doing...lol) the other guy throws his elbows up and forward to block the punch from crushing his face. Quite the opposite happened, when the guys knuckles connected full force with the elbows he broke a couple knuckles. The guy with the broken knuckles still won the fight, but he was the only one that went to the hospital that night.
I have seen several MA's teach a straight elbow as a defense against a punch and it can have strong effects. And before you jump to conclusions Casper, I am not saying that open hand is better. I am simply saying that every action has consequences......I personally strike with close fist because I have more of a boxing style of punching plus I would kinda feel like a girl swinging with my hand open........ |

Now here falcon i agree with you.
The closed fist is much better. I know some open hand stuff and have never liked. Learnt that when i used to do karate and all i can say is it just does not have the same affect as a punch. There is a place for it but I just dont think its worth it if your hands are conditioned.

Yes. I do have one, but it is based between my legs.
I didn't realise you had one at the end of your arm. I, like most people, thought yours was at the top of your neck. Dick Head. Haw haw haw!

Palm strikes protect your hands. Haven't hurt my hands punching to the body, but hitting anything other than a nose or a chin will damage your knuckles and hurt.
Your skull is a lot stronger than your knuckles. Falcon, I don't know what Army H2H is like , but leathernecks use different kinds of open hand strikes.

I can see some value in a palm strike to the chin but nothing more.
Now dont argue with me anymore. Ive told you im right so thats it.
