Default Favorite Combos & Techniques

Let's have a constructive thread on our favorite combos and techniques – either stand-up or submissions. This is a chance to share your knowledge and experience.

Here are some of my combos. There's nothing really special, just basic techniques that when combined with correct timing can be effective.

Jab, Cross, Roundhouse Kick to Elbow Strike

Step-in with a jab, side-step right (orthodox stance) & throw a right, followed by a left hook

For submissions, I like the double-leg takedown to the mount and armbar.

However, my favorite technique is one I've been developing since high school wrestling. The technique is illegal in HS wrestling ofcourse. Either I grab the opponent's lead hand (if he's within range and doesn't throw anything) or I shoot in to take his arm. Either way, I bring the arm towards me by pressing my elbow down and against his arm. At the same time, I merely sit down and the leverage forces him on his face with me on his back holding his arm at my disposal. It's hard to explain in words, but the technique takes less than 1 second to perform.

The logic behind this technique is that the opponent's lead hand is the closest limb (at least in certain stances). Also, it's not easy trying to execute a double-leg takedown against a skilled wrestler with tree-trunk legs... Therefore, this technique is sometimes useful.

When sparring I always had alot of success by using my rear hand to grab and pull down his guard, and then striking with my lead hand. Don't oknow why, it just came naturally.

On the ground I would merely hold down the opponent and then note areas where he could be struck.

In general I think martial arts have become much to complicated. People think that the more complicated combinations they use, the better they are. I think the opposite applies.

I learned a nasty one in the Hapkido seminar

I'll post a description and some photos on my page. I had Alain give me a sample of it full speed. It's been 10 days and I can still hear my elbow calling my name.

And he took it easy. He could have easily broken my arm into separate pieces... Blink of an eye and I was face first pounding the mat.

So what's your opinion of hapkido after the seminar?

I think if others trained in hapkdio or tu kong mu sool, they could learn variations and adjustments to what they know if not anything new.

I cannot say more until after I release the review.

After you read the review of the seminar, I'll be happy to go into much more detail.

Jab, Cross, Left hook - My basic weapon
Teep push kick - In case I want to push an opponent backwards then run away
Knee strikes followed by a throw - If an untrained person ever tries to grapple me I'm planning to knee them until they can't fight anymore then win with a spectacular throw technique (I know it won't be that easy but it should give me an advantage)

This move is one of my favorites. You take two fingers and thrust them toward his eyes while at the same time bring your leg up and kick him in the balls

One of my favorite techniques, just for fun is the jumping spinning crescent, or the Tornado Kick, one of my more practicle favorites is the roundhouse to hook to side snap to hopping hook.

The roundhouse to hook to side snap to hopping hook doesn't sound very practical to me.

Sage's illegal wrestling attack sounds like an armbar.

My combo... well my combo is the same as lizard's except I am a southpaw (well ambidextrous, but I like right foot forward better) so it would be a right hook, added with a left uppercut.

Jab-Cross-Body Hook-Uppercut. :-)

But really.... it would either be over in one punch or on the ground. I don't like getting hit. On the ground I like the guillotine, and the ankle achilles lock.

This sentence confused me a bit over in you would be out or are you so cocky to think you can strike out every opponent with one punch?

What I meant was, well, let me give you my father's proverb.

"If you punch a big ol' boy, and he just stands there and grins at'ya, ye'd better take off a'runnin."

If a shot to the nards doesn't at least stun a man, he is going to kill me. I had better run.

walking front kick as your opponent nears, he buckles over, right knee to the head, choke out if not already finished
