Question Which should i choose????

Ok everyone,

I've decided to take an art that has grappling.I'm looking for some info from you guys as to which one would provide what i'm looking for.I was trying to find a wrestling school because i use to wrestle back in the day but could'nt find one.The choices i have here in miami are Krav Maga,Shootfighting,Ju Jitsu,Bjj,judo, and Aki-Jitsu.

I've spent most of my martial arts training in striking arts.Although i use to wrestle i don't remember most of the techniques because i've spent 18yrs in kung fu another 4 yrs in karate.I want a grappling style that has alot of groundfighting or ground work, but that also has other things to offer. That's why i'm looking into things other than Bjj.

Could you guys please offer me your thoughts and why you think it would work for me? I really don't know much about these so that's why i turned to you guys.Since this is a grappling MMA forum i figured i get some good advice here.

Thank's in advance for your help.

jeff

Arrow I've kinda tried that.

platinum_angel,

Thanks for your reply!

I tried that and they really don't show their grappling techniques that much at the schools except for Bjj.They all say that they do have groundfighting, but it's after a certain level and such.I don't want to join a school to find out after a yr there really is no groundfighting.I figured you guys would know what groundfighting is within each style. That if Krav Maga really has good groundfighting or not.I'm leaning towards Shootfighting or Krav Maga ,but don't want to make that mistake.

sercuerdas ,

Thanks but do you know much about shootfighting?

What makes it different from Bjj is it similar to Bjj or what?

Thank's bro for any help!

shootfighting is japanese, muay thai standup and a mixed ground game( judo , catch wrestling, etc.) you will probably find a much better bjj teacher in the u.s. If your confident with your stand up ability the i would take bjj, if you want more of a mix then try shoot. imo the thing that bjj has is a much more highly developed game from the guard, now i'm a wrestler who doesn't prefer that position so shoot has a little more in the way of leg locks which help counter the guard. bjj has incorparated leg locks extremely well over the last decade.

i'm even starting to confuse my self here. bottom line is grappling happens so you need to have a understanding of what is going to happen there, but a basic working knowledge is all you need. don't fall into the trap of believing in a real fight a grappler will always win.

Thumbs up I feel very strong about my stand up.

I feel good about my fighting style all around stand up and on the ground, but feel i need to pay more attention to my ground work.Like i said i've been able to strike from the ground with good effects ,but i'm not going to fool myself into thinking that it's enough for the ground.

Thanks for the help bro!

I don't really know the difference between BJJ and GJJ (GJJ: Gracie Jiu Jitsu, which is what I take. And No, the Gracies' do not call their style BJJ) but I would take BJJ. Many people seem to think that BJJ is simply a sport now. It's not. Many people also seem to think that you MUST take someone down to finish techniques. You DON'T. But if it ends up on the ground, all the better in a way. How many people in your life know how to escape the mount? Or know how to escape the guard? This doesn't include fellow martial artist but that punk who is giving you the "eye".

they are the same thing basically. It got sorta politically incorrect to call it "Gracie JJ" since the whole nation uses it so they decided to call it BJJ.

No...they never decided to call it BJJ. That just happened on it's own through the random black belts that started to pop up through the country. In protest to this, Helio wears a blue belt in his country.

Arrow Ok then i need to change that i guess?

It's Gjj and not Bjj then.

I guess i'm guilty of calling it by the wrong name then.I thought Gjj was always called Bjj.

The guy who teaches it is Pedro Valente.according to the Gracies website. He is one of only twenty two ppl to receive his black belt from Helio Gracie himself in Helio's 70 yrs. That includes the Gracie family also.

Basicaly, if you study under a Gracie or someone from their camp then you should refere to it as GJJ. BJJ is just more universal.

Wasn't there some kind of argument over who could use the name GJJ? IN the end, anyone not directly from Helio's organisation has to say BJJ.
