Default Greatest Achievement in Martial Arts

My goal in the Martial Arts is to earn a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu... I don't have a Black Belt in any art and I know the speculation most people have about BB is that they're meanless. However, under my current BJJ study, it means something to me—everything you earn is hard-fought. A Black Belt is testament of all the hard work you've put in, much like a college degree, only with more aches and pain.

Of course, I'm not just interested in the Belt status or Black Belt itself... What I mean is to be at that level of skill and be recognized for achieving that level. Anyone else have similar goals?

Yeah thats cool i can really respect that.

Especially in BJJ it is hard to get from what ive heard so it DOES mean something. In fact it would be a real achievement.
Its nothing like a BB in Karate or TKD that means nothing.

Go for it and good luck.

I dont judge someone for getting a black belt but how long they continue their training & their attitude afterwards as it can change some people for the wrong reasons.......anyway goodluck & remember that the real training only starts when you acheive this.

Please do a Kyokushin BB exams and say that a Karate BB doesn't mean anything

Hey good luck Great Sage. 2 Observations.

1) Don't diss other people for getting Black Belts in Karate or TKD. I agree that BJJ is more effective, but if you've never been punched in the solar-plexus by a Karate guy or kicked in the head by a TKD guy, then you don't know what they can do.

2) Black Belt is just the beginning. It means you've mastered all the basics and understand and can apply all the principles. That fundamental knowledge opens the door to additional personal development and improvement in BJJ.

A black belt in BJJ means your a master. Not like the other arts. There are no 10th degree black bests. Your just a black belt. A BB in BJJ takes about 10 years. Including family, I think Helio Gracie has only given 20 BB's. But anyway as for goals.....

-Making the high school wrestling team
-getting my BB in hapkido
-just doing BJJ and improving and being the best I can, belts aren't important to me in that regard. BJJ for me needs to be fun, intense, and challenging. The pretty belts are just a side.

Yes... I know where you're coming from—I have done both karate and TKD. However, I'm not making a point about karate punches or TKD kicks. Any MA kick to the head or punch to the solar plexus will hurt, provided the person can pull them off. I think Ghost was referring to Mcdojos.

Well pointed out... Thanks, old man.

My goal is also to achieve a BB in BJJ, I just started training about a month ago and so far I love it! I'm 24 right now so I realize that won't be happening until I'm about 34. But its okay, I'm not in a hurry I just want to have fun and enjoy the learning experience.

i too would love to achieve bb in bjj.
i know belts arn't important but was is important to me is finishing something that you have started.
i will be about 40 yrs old at that stage, but i'm going to turn forty anyway so why not do it by achieving a bb in bjj which is very highly regarded.
to me getting to purple belt and quitting would be like doing 5 yrs of a 6 yrs diploma in engineering etc.
i also agree that when bb is achieved it is only the begining.
i am also doing this to be a good example to my son
kids mimic everything. he is only 2 yrs old and we are already grappling, just got to teach him how to strike closed fist,
he's been bitch slapping alot
