Default BJJ Defensive Strategies

As you all know, I'm relatively new to BJJ. So far my bad habits have gotten me tapped out by almost everyone in my class. I did learn to keep my head up to counter an armbar, tuck my chin to prevent chokes and use my shoulders to press down. What are some other things that I can benefit from knowing?

Several times I would get into good positons, but then the guy would slip out like he was grease... BJJ is smooth, man. I did tap out a kid who has been training about a year... No big consolation, but it helped my confidence.

At the risk of sounding...cryptic...the smallest holes/spaces count. Stick the person like glue when trying to control them. Other than that, I would like need situations to go over that you need help with.

I think staying calm does help, or you just end up flapping about and burning yourself out!

I got dirty stategies and clean strategies. If you just need to win no matter the cost, then it's a dirty strategy. An example of htiswould be to put soem salt and pepper mix in your kimono and hand before the match. The salt and peper generally getsinto their eyes when they get close and gives you the advantage

Now on a serious note. Keeping your head down if you are on top is key along with keeping your legs a bit far apart when you get thrown. If you manage to mount someone and don't keep yoru head down, the flexible people (like me) can reach around with their legs and throw you off. When youget thrown, keeping your legs apart makes it harder for them to mount you. That's all i could think of for now until you give us some scenarios. Good luck!

In his guard.: Always have both arms in or both arms out. Never leave one arm between his legs while the other is outside.

In your guard: Break his posture down. Get control of one side of him. (left arm and left leg or rt. arm/rt/leg). Control his head.

Attack him from your guard. Just trying to hold on to your guard is a loosing strategy.

Always control his hips: Always move your hips.

Never fight from flat on your back. Use your hips and work to one side of him so he cannot square up on you.

Never start your guard pass while he has a deep grip next to your neck.

Basic bottom positions are to learn from; not to fight from. Don't stay flat under a cross side or north/south. When you see them about to happen, start your escape before he gets completely down on you.

Always defend a choke attempt before you try to attack. Never ignore the choke.

Never burn out your grip trying for a choke you don't have. Sink a choke slowly like a boa easing in until it's too late.

Learn to send false signals. Bait a choke attempt when you want his arm.

Position before submission. Never give up control of his body unless you know you have the submission. Otherwise, keep control and work for the right opportunity.

If you are about to loose a dominate position, just switch to another and then come back if you want. ie. If he gets the elbow escape from your mount, be ready to go knee on belly. If he slips out of knee on belly, switch sides. Learn to flip from one dominate position to another smoothly. (Cross side-N/S-other side, etc.) This will wear him down mentally as well as physically.

Most moves mainly rely on moving your own body more than moving the other guy. You won't gas out if you remember this. (For instance: under side control- you don't push the guy off of you- you do move yourself out from under him.)

There are many more; but this is a start.

Just don't end up on the bottom. If you lack the skill to keep yourself from being on the bottom, just fight him off as hard as you can until you can't do it any longer.

the bottoms not all that bad, I don't mind having someone in my gaurd. The key for me is to always throw out he submissions from there though, not just sit there and wait like I used to do...

Attack, attack, attack.

For someone who is new to BJJ, you sure do have a lot of opinions about MMA fighters and Royce.

Go figure, huh?

I'm new to BJJ, not MMA... I've done wrestling and submissions in the past, along with boxing and other stand-up techniques... But then again, you seem to rank everyone by their BJJ... Go figure.

Why don't you do everyone a favor and stop trolling on other peoples threads... Get it over it already... I smell a troll here Ryan... Especailly since we already had a heel hook who was legitimate.

I'm sorry...I thought that this was an open forum, and members could post on what threads they wanted...much less one that the author asked advice on...Jeez...Guess I was thinking of another board.

Trolling, you moron? I was the first person to answer your thread. I was just coming back to it after I noticed how stupid you were yet again. You have yet to fail me with your asinine answers and lack of ability to see the truth. Nah, you would rather accuse people of not being intellectually inclined enough to understand your backward answers.

Sorry dude, no matter how much crap you post and how much you try to get people to kiss your amazing ass, it just won't happen.

You sir, are a putz.

I guess you were thinking about another forum... One where trolls roam free. The last time I checked stating an obvious insult isn't advice... But let's go back to where this all started, so I can illustrate my point... It's obvious you and your troll friend aren't over the whole Royce Gracie issue. So let’s revisit the thread... I simply stated my opinion based on rational, whereby you two became very dissappointed and resorted to derogatory remarks.

Royce Gracie making a Return to the UFC?

I could care less what Troll Hook thinks because as the thread continued, he couldn’t offer any rebuttals other than insults which are consistent with his lack of character. Frankly, I have better things to do than argue with two goons who cannot get over the fact that not everyone worships Royce Gracie... I rest my case.

Well..first of all you were the one who resorted to insults and derogatory remarks...it was Heel Dork? If I remember correctly. As for not being over the Royce Gracie issue, I am not even going to touch back to that with you becuase you have already showed that rather then have a debate with someone you would rather try as hard as you can to sound intellectual while not paying attention to the other persons argument. No my friend this has nothing to do with that. Once again I did not insult you in anyway I asked a question and I get reffered to as a Royce Gracie worshiping Goon...So I figure it is my turn to insult..

You sir are a Jackass..

If you would stop sticking your nose in the thesaurus you keep next to your computer for one second, and stop worrying about ho intelligent you come across when you post something you might actually learn something when you ask a question. As I have said many times before if you would actually read the posted responces you would realize that Mr. Heel Hook was the first one to respond to your question, to attempt to give you an answer, how that makes him a troll? I'm not sure...however what I am sure of is what make you an A-hole...if you want some more examples and or details I will be happy to give them to ya.

P.S.
