With all the sweat and physical contact during BJJ, I was wondering if there are any serious diseases that can be passed along. I say this because my instructor broke out with a skin rash last week... Also, I've noticed cold sores on my lip and my body is always itching—symptoms I hardly get.
I take a shower before and after class and wash my uniform immediately, so hopefully that helps. Speaking of which, a few guys in my gym need to improve their hygeine—they stank, man.

Ringworm is the big worry for communicable skin diseases. Athlete's foot is also common and easily curable. Lice could be a problem as well. Blood from cuts & scratches is also a worry.
Here is a link to thread about curing Ringworm on Sherdog. http://www.sherdog.net/forums/showth...threadid=33760

you can easily get scabies(similar to lice).
I got mine on my leg from using gym equipment. It spread to my whole body as I did not know what it was until I went to the doctor. Sulpher cream was what worked.. You can get it using infected towels, beds etc and also spread it to your family very easily. Rash is terrible and gets worse. You can get warts if you have a cut, fungi infections, herpes through cuts in skin, etc. You better know who you are wrestling with as there are many diseases that can be very unpleasant that you can get and spread to others. Soap after contact will not do any good. |

A while ago, Ring worm went through our school and I got it. All you need is some antiseptic cream and it went away in several days.
It takes a concerted effort to have a clean school, everyone washes/cleans their Gi. the mats are scrubbed down with a bacterial detergent and people take good care of themselves. If someone has a stinky Gi, tell them. Or have your instructor tell them. |

Well... Now I've got bruises all over my arms... Weird looking red and purple spots on my anterior and posterior bicep... Anyone familiar with this?
On another note: My instructor has ring worm! Should I stay away from the gym for a while, or keep attending classes? He's got a bandaid on it, but I don't really want to get it infected. I've got a newborn son at home. Your opinions?

great sage
i have only seen ring worn once on this kid but it was a long time ago so if i remember correctly it looks like a pink ring. so from your description it might be ring worm. as for the infant ting i don't think it would hurt her any but might give you some headaches at night lol. just when you get home from practice make sure you take a shower right away. and scrub your whole body down with antibacterial soap. and do what sweepem said too

Thats one reason some people do stand up arts like Tae Kwon Do or karate or thai boxing. Becuase they wont want to roll around with other men and get diseases.

Ring worm ohunnnjl eew!
Sorry, bad memories of the recurring ringworm incident of 2000. We could not escape it. We would mop the mats down with bleach and disinfectant, individually and lysol them too. Inevitably one guy would come back to class too early and give it to us all again. Still, I would rather live with ring worm eternally, than do TKD. ![]() ![]() "Everyday spent training is one day closer to learning something." .....Spiderchoke
