Default What is a good grappling art to start off with?

What do you think is a good grappling art to learn for somebody who is brand new to the grappling arts? I am leaning towards judo, because it seems to be pretty well-rounded, and it is one of the few styles that you can get good quality instruction for a cheap amount of money. Thanks in advance.

What do you want out of martial arts?

Competition?
Self defense?
Fun?
Excersise?

You have to tell people what you're looking for before they can give advice.

Self-defense, primarily. Fun and exercise, second. I would like to compete somewhat, but probably not on a regular basis.

Honestly I think the best base to have is good ole fashioned wrestling. It gives you a real good balance and eye for openings...

Just my opinion but I think having uncles who wrestled and doing wrestling a bit myself helped me when I started BJJ and Grappling.

Yes, I considered wrestling also. It seems to be pretty hard to find a place that teaches wrestling as it relates to self-defense, though. I could see eventually cross-training in it, however. I would really like to study BJJ someday. However, I think judo has both good stand-up and ground grappling, whereas BJJ seems to excell solely at ground grappling.

Yeah, I suppose you are right. Like I said, I am pretty new to the grappling arts, so I hope I did not sound like I was putting anybody's art down. Thanks again, guys.

if u want it for self defence primarily i reckon' Ju jitsu, ninpo, or aikido prolly in that order. If u wanted to make more of a thing of competing as well go judo i would think

Yeah aikid is the shit. Sorry I mean aikido is shit, don't do it for self defense.

It may suprise you, but in a real fight people don't run slowly towards you holding their hand above their haed. And sometimes they actualy try to hit you instead of just letting you throw them, it's so unfair.
