As some might know, I just started trianing about 3 mo ago. What I am training in has alot of need for cardio (wing chun base also toaght with some kali, thia boxing, savate, western boxing, jkd concepts). I have been smoking for about 13 yrs and I would really like to stop, but I am finding that very hard do to the fact that I am now raising for kids and probably will be for the next 4-6 mo. I was wondering if anyone was able to obtain good cardio in spite of stilling smoking. As I said I really want to quite but with everything going on I feel like saying: screw the cigs and pass the crack

I've never been a smoker, but the people I know that had success quitting have switched to something else. My mom and stepdad used Tic-tacs. Everytime they wanted a cigarette, they'd have a Tic-tac....I'd say that's a better addiction. You just have to break the routine. My friend's dad chewed on pens. My dad went cold turkey....just destroyed them (ensuring that he wouldn't dig through the kitchen trash if a strong craving hit) and dealt with it for a few weeks. They say that the first 2 weeks is the hardest. Good luck....you need to do this for yourself and your family.

I feel you pain my friend...
I am a smoker...I have smoked since I was 13... As for being winded and having good cardio it has never really slowed me down...Probally being that both my parents and my step father smoked like chimneys so my system was always clouded and I just didn't know the difference..But I am also on the road to quiting becuase I will be having my first child a baby boy in Nov and I am not gonna put him through the same crap I had to go through with smoke.

I smoke as well, and you can have good cardio and smoke. The only problem is you have to work about 10x as hard as someone who doesn't smoke. I can get up and run a couple miles and then grapple for a long time, but that's just because I do it everyday. I notice a big difference when I skip a couple days and then go back to training.......seems to have more effect missing a few days when you smoke.

Thanks for the insight gentlemen,
I don't smoke around the children (I go outside). I am starting to jump rope on a daily ( right know I am up to ten minutes; working for twenty) and I plan to keep up. Eventually I do plan to quite, but with the added stress I don't feel its a good idea considering when I try to quit my attitude gets nasty and my wife wants to kill me. I just wanted to know if it was possible to have good cardio in spite of smoking and I appreciate your comments. |

If you are having problems controlling your cravings, try to divert your thoughts into something that you will really get into. I have never smoked and do not know what it is like, but i have a very small case of prurigro on my ankle. How this relates to smoking? lemme tell ya. What prurigo is are small little nodules on that send an itchiness to your very soul. Have you ever scratched your head or a bug bite then stop for some reason? If you have you will feel the urge to scratch. This "urge" is intensifed at least 20 times when you have prurigro, sometimes you have to scratch up to half an hour before it goes away, leaving my ankle with blood everywhere, thus leaving it wide open for infection and it will never heal if i scratch. Ok back to the topic. THe thing is, we both have urges, we both have cravings of a sort. Although mine may not be as intense as yours but i believe the process is still teh same. Whenever i feel the urge to scratch, I just think thoughts "happy thoguhts" if you know what i mean. I am completely serious but that's the only thought that seems to work.

Heres my two cents worth I smoked for about 15 years, I tried every way to quit just did not have the will power I guess. They say quitting smoking is as hard as quitting heroine, can't answer that one but can imagine. I have been smoke free for a couple of years now thanks to smokeless tobacco i.e. snuff. it's not a safe alternative but hey I can breathe now. Try EVRYTHING and find SOMETHING that works.

If you actually want to do it, just do it. If you don't actually want to do it, you will keep making excuses for yourself until you die of cancer. Cakegirl Oh, and you stink. No offense, but all smokers do.
