We have a couple of military guys in the school and their favorite terms seem to be "keep hitting harder", "why did you stop. You should've knocked me out. It's the only way I'm gonna get better" , "show no mercy". etc etc

I'm in the military and all the guys I train with are military. Nobody tries or even thinks that sort of crap. It comes down to the old saying 'a few bad apples.....' However, I do try to train will realizm in mind. When we spar, we might go a little harder and more extreme than some other folks, but I don't think being in the military has anything to do with it. Look at the Dog Brothers for crying out loud. Last edited by Nutz; 09-04-2003 at 02:24 AM. |

I've had quite a few friends in the military. I guess you can say, they are in the ultimate macho fraternity. Yes, most guys are soldiers training to defend our country and be tough, both mentally and physically. I'm sure many of these military guys are young.
There are exceptions but I think you get a young military guy coming to a martial arts school and they want to prove to themselves and maybe others, they are tough. I'm sure in their military physical training, when a guy goes balls out until he is the victor or gets KO'd, he's da man. |

I trained with military guys extensively.
Both my instructors were military and they had none of that. Not once was that attitude displayed. silly, silly people.

There probably have been occasional mutant animals in the past that did enjoy pain (pain messeges stimulating the reward part of the brain). But generaly they probably died fast, VERY fast. No normal person actualy likes pain, that's the whole point in having pain to start off with: You avoid things that might damage you.
Next question please.

Having been a soldier for most of my life, and a student of the fighting arts for even more of it....
When I am training, I do want my partners to use a realistically high level of force. THe guys are right...They are training for war, and need to keep that in mind. If you are there in the dojo or whatever you call your gym for spiritual growth, that's cool. More power to ya. THese guys though, are there to leanr some trick thst might keep them alive. THey understand that realsim is a necessaity. On the other hand...When I am training civilian SD clients, I do not aim to hurt them. I will gradully increase the level of impact, but never to the point where I am breaking bones or anything. If they are there to learn Self-defense/defensive tactics, they need to learn how to absorb a punch or two,'cause it's gonn happen. RLTW

I have seen both types. I know a guy who is a Sgt. in the Marine Core, but he doesn't use any extraordinary aggression, he just stays in the flow and works on raising the game of everyone aruond him.
Then again, I've seen guys who go for the kill, every time, no matter what.

Intensity should be relative to the person thats training and can be gradually raised over time. Getting caught once in a while by a good punch or kick just keeps things in perspective and helps one to understand that getting hit is not the end of the world (so long as you're not headhunting when you spar with them). |
