I've been noticing recently how very many UFC and other MMA fighters have cauliflower ears? Don't these guys know any better than to train without ear protectors? Or did they get that way from pro competition? In boxing, ears like that are a sign of incompetence.

In some studios, everyone has them. It is a badge of honor almost in a cult sort of way. I am usually one of two or three people who wear ear protection at our place.
My opinion is that it is a sign of immaturity and wanting to fit in. Most of these guys will regret it when they have to grow up and get jobs and responsibilities. A prospective employer will just be staring at their ears during the job interview, a perspective customer will do the same. The best term for them I have heard is "chick repellent". Lastly, why telegraph to a possible opponent on the street that you are a grappler. DUMB. REAL DUMB. - Oldguy. |

Cauliflowered ear is when fluid builds up underneath the cartollege in your ear. If treated fast enough, you can avoid it. look at a picture of Randy Couture, and you'll see what it is. It can be caused by constant rubbing against the ears, or blows to the ears. |

from 12 years of wrestling, i noticed that the guys who did were the headgear got worse ears than the guys who didn't. alot of times the gear pull get pushed and pulled over your ears worse than not wearing any at all.
