Actualy, I have no idea. For some reason I didn't even think to ask him. This is part of their training for when they go to pride. Not to long ago they competed in a tournie that was no Gi but they wore theirs. He brought the tape with him when he was staying at my house for the seminar we were hosting and it was frikken awsome.

They wore their gi's at a no-gi tournament? I never knew that was allowed. Wearing a gi could provide many unfair advantages over someone who isn't wearing a gi. As I'm sure you're all aware these include certain chokes and locks which can only be used if you're wearing a gi. Also it's common knowledge that wearing a gi absorbs your opponent's sweat and makes them much easier to hold onto, which in my opinion is one of the harder aspects of no-gi wrestling.

True, but also at the same time it gives you a handicap in the same sense. It can add chokes that can be done against you, and pinned by the Gi in certain ways and whatnot. It can work for you or against you.

Your quote is kinda funny to me. When I am teaching (I teach people who just started) that is one of my favorite things to say to them. Why? Cause it's so the truth which obviously you know.

I suck without the gi because I always grab my opponent's gi, not their body.

But if I had to pick between being the guy with the gi and being without it in such a match, I'd be the guy without it. It's so much easier to escape certain situations without it, it's really hard and tiring to escape with it.

I would always fight with a GI if I had a choice. Them grabbing you and the soaking of the sweat factor is to much of a bonus. Like I said before, it can work against you as well. I think I have an idea of a new post...later that is.

Maybe you should try training in some no-gi classes for a while? My school has a no-gi class once a week - it's really interesting to not the difference in technique needed for gi and no-gi.

Look at the new update to this event.

THE ULTIMATE SUBMISSION SHOWDOWN(TM) (USS) is about to set another milestone in the history of martial arts. Developed to showcase submission skills, which are rarely seen on today's NHB arena, this is another groundbreaking event from the creator of the UFC.

Tito Ortiz, Frank Shamrock, Dan Severn, Mike Van Arsdale, Gokor, Sakuraba and Yoshida have been invited. They have all declined to participate or send a representative. The organizers are still talking to: Kimo, Dean Lister, Dan Henderson, Pat Miletich, Matt Hughes, Guy Metzger, Ken Shamrock, Ricco Chiaparelli and Marco Ruas among others to see if they want to participate or at least send a representative. We are looking for the world's best submission fighter. Do you have what it takes? Do you know who does? Competitors from all over the world are encouraged to apply online:

Too bad Ortiz isn't going. I would love to see him lose...

I prefer grappling No GI.. having a GI makes it easier for the opponent to grab me.. choke me with the GI.. many things.. but ofcourse.. all things have several opinions/sides..

im definitely no grappling master, but
"absorb what is useful, discard what is useless"
i'll never have a gi on on the street. gi is for the gym and makes it all more interesting it semms due to the extra reportoire of locks that can be added.
i was told that to practice with a gi only makes you better when you take it off. any thoughts?

Maybe the ideal answer to this question is to do both!

I train without a gi. Its funny because I rolled with a guy who has a background in Judo or TJJ. The first time I rolled with him, he asked me where he should put his hands (no dirty jokes now ). Just because I didn't have a gi on, he didn't know how to grab me.

It didn't take him long to adapt though. He did point out there were many submissions he couldn't do without a gi.
