What is the experience of the forum members that have stopped training for an extended period ( a year or more) and then resumed their training?

Was the physical memory, (as the cliche) like riding a bike, still pretty much in place. Was your base still good, your escapes, etc.

I'm sure the stamina isn't as robust, but I'm not asking about conditioning. I just want to know if the "zone" was anywhere close to attainable.

Cool

BJJ just ain't like riding a bike.

If you are a good athlete, then it shouldn't take you long to get back to where you were when you left off.

But if you an Average Joe, it might take quite a bit longer if you lay off for a year.

If you're below Average Joe, you'll suck for AT LEAST a few months to get the mind attuned to BJJ.

BJJ and other sports takes a lot of timing, coordination and instincts.

It is like riding a bike.

I've had a couple of guys who dropped out of my club for 6 months or more, then came back.

Their strength and conditioning was gone, but their techniques and sense of flow came right back by the end of the first class.

The basic positional flow, moving around the clock, being heavy, moving hips first, breaking the guy's balance... that all stays.

I took my daughter roller skating the other day. It had been at LEAST 22 years since I skated. I was wobbly for about 5 minutes, then it came right back. After an hour I was flying around the rink and cutting corners with the best of them.

Thumbs up

I agree with John, as somebody who's done it repeatedly, LOL.
