And then take them in the guard and put them in a juji gatame until they tap?with a baton I could just smash their hand to disarm them.

After two years of kenjitsu and a year of kali I feel proficient with a knife. If confronted with a knife I'm afraid I could fataly wound someone, with a baton I could just smash their hand to disarm them. What would you guys prefer in this situation.

Unless you come up against someone who has 3 years of kali, or 4, or 27, and they disarm you, and you end up having your own weapon used against you.Originally Posted by alwaysmixwell

The chances of coming up against someone who has trained in the same style as you for longer than you have, not very likely. The chances of someone who has trained in martial arts before - pretty likely - numbers are increasing!Originally Posted by alwaysmixwell

The chances of meeting someone who's trained at a McDojo are increasing, you mean.

Well in NY both the baton and knife are illegal to carry. When I work at night I usually carry both but always the baton. I guess the question is not what we think but what are your experiences where you live. Are you in constant threat of crime where ppl are pulling knives, is it pure SD or fighting?Originally Posted by Red Rooster

Someone with 27 years of MA experience probably isn't gonna rob me at knife point.
I'm not sure how you guys capture the quotes at the beginng of your posts, maybe someone can enlighten me.![]()
IPON, I was a bouncer for a long time, and I hung out at some pretty crazy punk rock bars.![]()
RR hit reply in the bottom right corner of the post you want to quote.
If it is bouncer work, like I said I take the baton and knife. The baton I pull out quick if needed and the knife as the last resort

the baton is illegal to carry in australia, unless you are a licenced security guard
peace.....for now
My vendors won't ship illegal weapons to Ca. and they do ship me the telescopic batons. Which makes me beleive that they are legal, probably depending on the fashion that we carry or display them.
A cop did take one from my student saying that it was illegal. But he did not arrest or charge him which makes me think that the cop kept it for himself.

I guess I'm old fashioned but in this situation I would prefer my 1911 .45 acp DeathRay.
But to answer your question, in the state of Tennessee you CAN carry a baton IF you have completed the state required training class which is only four hours long and also covers chemical sprays (OC/CS, Pepper spray, mace).
It is a shame that some states wouldn't "allow" people to properly defend themselves against deadly attackers. Politicians just don't realize that criminals are criminals! If they are willing to rob you breaking another law by having an illeagal weapon isn't going to cross their minds.
I agree with HandtoHand, if you can't whip someones ass with a weapon what makes you think you can whip him unarmed?
