Hi all,
I have seen many many people training for self defence from a guard or some sort and a pre detirmined stance - whether this is a boxing style guard and stance or a tai chi one. In both schools i train at - (TJJ, and internal chinese) we train for self defence from no guard or pre determined stance and deal with the attack from a natural or normal standing position. I think that this prepares you far better for sudden violence on the streets. Just wondered how you train for sudden violence - if at all - and what your thoughts are on training from stance or without stance? Cheers Chris |

Chris - go here
www.geoffthompson.com and look for his work on "the fence". It is basically a stance that does not look like a stance, but gives you all the advantages of one. Get into the forum too. You'd be very welcome, and there are loads of Door Staff on it. |

cheers bri,
Yeh i am aware of his stuff - the fence is good from a confrontational point of view and very very useful for doorman. I am talking more about the unexpected attack, and stratergies for defending yourself from this neutral position. Have you got any of Geoff Thompsons Vids? What are they like? Thanks for the link - will go over n have a look at that forum. cheers Chris |

If you want to train for sudden violence...have someone in the class swing a baseball bat at your head while you are not ready. Perhaps, 2 guys can jump you in the locker room...maybe someone can punch you in the face as you are leaving the can...baseball bat to the head as you are walking to the training area...3 guys can jump you while you are going to your car. This will surely keep you on your toes. If you want I can come over and set up the scenarios or I will even render my services as an "attacker".

Chris.
I bought the "Dead or Alive" book, and it was like a veil had been lifted regarding pre-fight issues (which are not covered at all in most Martial Arts. As for the videos, I have the "Real Punching" series (3 tapes). They are ok, and have some things I find useful. But, to be honest, they're a little repetitive, and I reckon that all the relevant info could have been put into one tape. The forum is a good one, with some knowledgeable guys on it. I behave myself there, out of respect for the Mods. But this place has people like Spanky, so its open season...... |

Most likely reaction? Simply to clinch and control the arm of who ever is assalting me. It's all the same really...

you train from the guard cuz its the most likely bad position your going to get into.....ie: some drunk at a bar tackles you.
the idea of training martial arts is to best prepare your body (by training your neurons to react quickly) in a bad situation. if u train long enough you can tell the difference between an aggressive stance and a non-aggressive stance....and if u train long enough that same guy at the bar who throws a haymaker punch looks like he is in slow motion. |
