do what i do. grab his head jerking it towards you and drive it into the ground. I used to do that all the time. I gave a couple of guys some bloody noses too but hey its legal.

Practice as much as u can before the tryouts. When it comes time to compete you should be very confident in winning, regardless of how much or how little you practiced in preparing.

BJJ .. if you are in the guard you are on your back...that's called a defensive pin...you loose. The objective of folkstyle (h.s.) wreslting is to pin your oponents back on the mat (actually scapula). So for wrestling unlearn some aspects of BJJ. shooting, take downs, headlocks, liited throws are fine. Submissions are generally illegal and not only do you run the risk of beging kicked out of the wrestling program for trying to guilletine or cross armbar your opponent...you could seriously run the risk of getting your ass kicked by trying to act cool.
You have to things goining for you: 1 conditioning..period are 2-2-3 and 2. like you said you are used to the ground. Don't worry about being a starter, just have a plan. Do the best you can...roll with e guys for a month or two and then wrestle-off (challenge) the starting person and show everyone how tough you are that way......then everyone will be like ooooooooooohhh.....AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH we are not worthy Oh, is this varsity, JV or freshman and when you master those spinning drill your BJJ will become more interesting

BJJ - You can't choke someone on teh wrestling mat that;s what I mean. They are probably using a front headlock not a guiillitinte.
Anyway, good luck!!
