Need info on New York GJJ training association...

I was thinking about joining. Anybody here train there? Is it any good? Any info would be appreciated.

Dude, there are three big schools in NY. I don't know of any Training Association offshoots, but you have Renzo's school, Marcos Santos's school, and Fabio Clemente's school all for bjj, not to mention a whole ass load of schools for other fighting arts. Learn from a real pro dude, one that has students that are as advanced as the guys that run these associations.

IMO, The NYC Associations lean more towards competition ( timed matches, points etc) and the Bronx and Westchester TA's more towards self defense.

I think that if I were you I would check out the Relson TA in the bronx. Relson is the best out of the Gracies and I heard it was a good school.

Relson is very good, but I wouldn't say he's the best of the Gracie's. Renzo's is definatly the place to be, just look at the number of top guys he has there in just a few years. Matt Serra:Pan Am and Mundial champ, and ADCC 2001 american qualifier, Nick Serra: shootfighting champ of NY, Joe D'arce: Pan Am champ, 2nd in Mundial, Ricardo Almeida:Pan Am champ, 2x 2nd place ADCC, 3rd ADCC, Rodrigo Gracie:ADCC champ etc....too many guys to name them all.

Relson doesn't teach in NYC.

Relson visits occasionally in the Bronx. Classes are run by excellent Purple Belts.

Royce taught in Thornwood 2 weeks ago and there are frequent vists by Caique and sometimes Rorion. Classes also taught by an EXCELLENT instructor that also happens to be a Purple Belt

One thing to keep in mind, if money IS an object, training in NYC is quite a bit more expensive than at the Bronx/Westchester TA's.

Or you can train with guys that have purple belts and blue belts and have your teacher be a black belt.

I used to train with Renzo a couple of years ago and would love to go back, but money and most importantly the 1 hour commute to the city is too much with my schedule. The Westchester GJJ association seemed like a good compromise to get back into BJJ - its 15 minutes from where I live and quite cheap. I was just wondering if anyone had any experience at THAT particular school - whether good or bad - to see what I would be in for. Miyagi - I know training with a black belt is best (hey Renzo is the best instructor I've ever had, I trained back when Matt Serra and Nick were still blue/purple belts!), but right now I ain't got the time to go to Manhattan or the money for his classes. I figure some training is better than none

I have to agree with Armbar is Back

Of course training with a BB is the best option in an all things equal world. And at every opportunity I train with one. But all things,including time,travel and expense are rarely equal. Plus, as a relative beginner, until I can school one of these Purple Belts, which I can't, I will assume that I have something to learn from them.

IMHO, I think you'll be impressed with the teaching and environments at any of the NY TA's or Academys whether taught by Black or Purple

I fully agree with Muddy Waters, these purple belts do have alot to offer, not to mention the frequent visits by either Relson, Royce, or Caique.

I train at the Westchester TA and I love it. Everyone's friendly and there to learn. The teacher has been in the Torrance instructor training program for a few years, so he's very detail oriented. They also have classes every day of the week except Friday. There's usually a guest black belt that teaches every couple of months or so. The different people you roll with will have a wide range of skill levels, which I like. Did you have any specific questions I didn't answer?

If you're only 15 minutes away, don't take anyone's word for it - just try out a few classes on a few different days and see if it's for you.

I help run the Bronx T/A for Relson - I think you will find them to have great training environments and a lot of very good instruction at a small cost - and i think both the westchester t/a and the bronx T/a do a great job of getting black belts in freaquently. if cost or travel is an issue they are a great solution but I think you should try to get to renzo's as often as you can afford -even if its 1x a month - the training and instruction there is very, very good
