Hatsumi's ultimate test? By Mike Hamer - Tue, 13 Feb 2007 23:34:11 GMT
========= I've heard rumours around that for one of the dan tests at the Bujinkan the student must avoid being sliced with a sword from behind. I was told Hatsumi cuts down with lethal intent, and your supposed to be able sense that intent and move out of the way. Have I been mislead? Or is this for real? And if it is, how do they deal with the situation if someone gets cut? Thanks in advance. Read More ... or click reply below. ------------------------------ MartialTalk.com Post Bot - Ninjitsu Feed |

wow. that is something else, neh? not sure if something like this would actually be part of a test for rank, but it would sure explain the small number of instructors!!! interesting concept though. thanks. |

hello,
didn't notice the read more button first time through. it seems evident from thier responses that some type of test fitting this description exists. what is not clear is whether this is an "awareness" test or "mechanical technique" test. in either case, considering the occupational hazards the "boys in black" faced, the instructors of yore may very well have devised ways to test the "survivability" of an operator. rough job, neh? thanks. |

You are referring to the 5th Dan test. This test is to see if you have developed a level of awareness (as anyone would develop if you spend much time and sweat training in your art of choice) and it is only given by Hatsumi or in the presence of him by one of the senior instructors.
The test is done with a fukuro shinai , so no one gets cut just a little bruising( usually the ego..) if you get hit. After passing the test you are an official instructor and the true learning begins from there....
