Ninjutsu and self-defence By Johnnie Soda - Fri, 20 Apr 2007 00:55:51 GMT

=========

I'm interested in learning a practical art that would be good in self-defense situations. As a kid, I did Tae kwon do for almost a decade, but it wasn't what I was looking for (too sporty, not really practical for defense.) I wrestled in high school, and have been doing some Jujutsu as well, but want to learn things practical in more situations (on the ground Jujutsu's great, but I want something more encompassing.) I've been looking around, and ninjutsu came up. Would Ninjutsu teach me enough practical things to be a competent self defender? Also, I was wondering if, in terms of how well it would prepare you for self defense, there was a significant difference in the styles. Input from anyone who's either trained under multiple styles or has any positive or negative views on self defense applications of Bujinkan, Genbukan or Jinenkan would be greatly appreciated.

Actually I was also thinking about taking Ninjitsu and was wondering about the self defence applications. That would be my primary purpose (there are also other reasons, challenge, stay in shape, fun, etc....). I seen a lot of clips on Utube. The joint locks look pretty interesting. Kind of a little different twist to them than the norm. I took some JuJitsu and Akido (Nijitsu looks like is has a little of both with a little Judo thrown in). Then again, something about the Ninjitsu stance looks like it might not work in a street fight and some of the strikes (well it looked like a lot of lunging, like a really long front stance, or to avoid a strike, they would go into a deep back stance). Some of that looks odd. Don't be me wrong, I like different, stuff people have not seen is good. I just wonder if it works. They also say it has good foot work. I think I also read something that it was not a good self defence (sorry I cannot remember where, actually it might have been a poll on a forum and it did not score high), and there are other arts that one should take. I also think I see the art get trashed on bullshido.

Well I have not taking Ninjitsu yet (I will very soon, hopefully this week). I will let you know what happens.

So what do people out there who take it (or have taken it and stopped) feel about it and self defence. Does it have some interesting aspect to it that you feel gives you an edge over other arts?
