TNT is on a distinguished road
Default Do you feel this bastardizes martial arts?

I was talking with a colleague who told me that his friends go to a sensei just so that they may learn enough to compete in UFC's and the like. Do any of you MA practitioners feel that this is a bastardization of the martial arts?

Nope. Different people have different goals for studying the martial arts. UFC type events are for the more athletic and competitive martial artists. Some just do it for weight control, discipline, interest in other cultures or just to learn some kind of self defense.

The good thing about UFC type training is that its probably more realistic than other types of self defense in that you have someone that's trying to submit you and not going to stop unless you stop them.

You have to keep your hands up and keep moving to slip punches and fire back your own - that's more realistic than having someone get into their low horse stance with their chin up in the air and hands at their hips throwing stiff reverse punches that stop just before your face.

Last time I saw a fight go down, each guy stopped, got into their horse stances and tried to cross block each others reverse punches....

I agree with Tom! If these guys don't learn well enough then they will get the shit beat at them in the UFCs or like events and that’s no sweat off my back.
