Usually works unless you're heavily outnumbered (i.e. you're in a gym where the general atmosphere favors that kind of behavior, in which case you're better off not being there).

If it's one to three individuals you're more likely to succeed converting them.

I usuallly stop the offender with a half-joking remark such as; "Please! watch your language. There are gentlemen present." (You might want to try that next time it happens. It works especially well if you're a lady) If that doesn't work I come right back at them with a serious, straightforward request; "I was serious before. I find that kind of language offensive and I'm asking you to be more careful of your speech." I try to deliver that second shot in private. People are more receptive if you don't embarrass them publicly.

I can't remember a time when the offender didn't become apologetic and stopped the gutter talk.

Can't resist a quick story;
There was a military general who fought in the Spanish-American war in Cuba. He was not only respected and admired but actually loved by his soldiers for being one of the common folk. One day he noticed a group of his men laughing and telling stories and he approached them to join in the fun. He was standing there with a smile on his face, listening to a joke, anticipating the punch line, when the man telling the story abruptly stopped speaking.

The general urged him to continue; C'mon, what happened then? Why did you stop?"

The man gestured for him to look behind him and said, "General, a lady was passing by and my story was not fit for a lady to hear."

To which the general replied; "Then why would you think it fit for a gentleman to hear it?" and walked away.
.......words not only of a gentleman....but of a genteel man. Kudos to you, sir.

Anyways seeing we're on the topic of inappropriate jokes I've got about my Math teacher who's really looks as though she's under an illegal chemical influence, and cant teach. It goes kind of like this;

Why did Ms. (wont name) become a teacher?

Because she didn't make any money as a crack*****.

Now under normal circumstances this would be inappropriate but she does look like one and she is nasty and durning class you look up and her nipples are always hard, 'cause she's got the windows open . It'd be okay if she were hot like the other math teach, but she's is anything but.

Anyways my opninion on the matter is I dont mind swearing as long as it isnt a constant f*** this and f*** that, that a**, what a b****, f****** fa****, and Aww sh**. If swears are used to desribe members of the oppsite sex than they're perferctly okay. Common things i hear go along the lines of; Oh i'd love to tap that ass, look at the size of those knockers, I wonder if she enjoys the feel of the thong inbetween her ***** lips. If its pointless trashtalking with or without swears that does tend to get under my skin. To a certain extent swearing is tradition in places, besides why have an extensive vocabulary when you can use the traditional multi-purpose 4 lettered word.

Anyways I'm thinking of posting a poll with the following question; You see a hot girl sucking on a popsicle. What do you think?
A: Wow it must be a really hot day out.
B: OMG is that grape, that is my favorite flavor.
C: Suck on this popsicle.

I'm intrested in which one my fellow male users think of. Sorry ladies but i dont think this is your kind of question.

Take everything you just said and assume I feel the opposite. I fail to see the rationale for your story about Ms. whomever, the idea that swears are appropriate for solving the gender barrier are a flagrant degradation, and why would you post such a useless question as a poll? What do you intend to learn from it? Take that to some porn site, wait, did I just solicit sex to a minor??? --- never mind that previous sentence.

H2H, I fight hard to win respect of adults for students. You'd better be careful because statements like yours serve to undermine all for which I work.

A number of years ago, I made an active decision to rule out all swearing from my mouth. I firmly believe that what's inside men's hearts, comes out through their mouths. So, I work backwards. I figure if I can clean my mouth, perhaps I can aid in the purification of my heart. (NOTE: I said purification, not putrification. Ever notice how close they are? Think about it.) Most people around me hear my lack of "colorful metaphor" and, out of respect, will choose to attept to curb their obscenity.

As a middle school teacher, I have seen my share of angry students, that is those who harbor anger in their very essence and being. These are the ones whom I hear in the hallway for no reason "Man! FU", "I'd love to f'in f her"... etc. It's purely a biproduct of useless, undirected, and unwarranted hostility.

I'm not that old, but in my almost 25 years, I've found only one place for such rhetoric, in the art of prose. When describing someone who contains such anger in novels, poems, etc. it is fitting to show them in their true light. That being said, I feel that NO WHERE else should such disrespectful language be tolerated. Not on TV where my currently growing, soon to be born, son can watch it, not in public establishments, not anywhere. Especially, we should not tolerate this in the formal dojo where we teach honor and respect. We are becoming the land of the mcdojo, but we already exist as the land of the mchypocrite.

End of rant...

Hikage, one saying has served me well over the years: "To each, their own."

Everybody is entitled to live their own life, wherever it takes them, or whoever it may annoy.

Hikage, Good on you! That's as good a place to start as any.

Not trying to thump on my Bible but...

"It is not what goes into a man's mouth that defiles him; but it is what comes out of his mouth--*that* defiles a man." Matthew 15:11

i don't curse frequently, but occasionally when doing sports related activities. i'll remind myself to think about this verse.

The question is not 'can' or 'cannot' it is 'should' or 'should not'. It is a question that everyone has to answer for themselves.

This goes beyond cursing - I feel that immoral and unethical behavior often has less to do with intention and more to do with lack of self-reflection. Many times, people simply don't ask themselves "What is the right thing for me to do in this situation? What kind of person do I want to be?"

Just trying to illustrate a point. It's like greg just posted; it's not whether or not you can but whether or not you should.

Sometimes when you choose to take the high ground others see you as some kind of self-important, uptight prude who never does anything inappropriate. Usually it's not like that at all, it's just some regular everyday individual trying to do the right thing and be a better person.

Idefinately agree. I think it should alsways be the goals of MAs to strive to better themselves in all areas of thier lives. The use of language and the ability not use foul language is certainly an aspect that gets missed frequently. I must say that I do get tired of the amount of cursing on TV radio Music and with conversations when every third word is some profanity it gets tiring. I try to make an effort to reduce the amount of foul language I use.

As an aside, I went with my monther to buy a new car and I wanted her to test drive the car. So we get in teh car with the salesman. He says I love this eff'in car ( montero) then later was discibing the features and said this is the Sh*T. with my mother in the car!!!! Since I would not hit the guy in fornt of my mother I turned the car around back to the dealer and went to the supervisor and explained that I was going to buy he car until I was treated so badly.

As we learned as children just because you can do something doen't mean you should. People generally don't undertsand how powerful the word respect truely is.

my 2 cents
