Default Importance of Play in fighting

http://www.willemdethouars.com/monkeys.htm

How important do you feel "playing" is to developing your martial arts? Children seem to learn best when the lessons are made fun. This article also talks about play creating formless martial practices. How do you think this could be incorporated for adults into real-life scenarios? any thoughts or input?

I don't think it helps us prepare for our enemies. We used to bodyslam each other and try to do all that crazy stuff that kids do. It makes you more comfortable at close distances. It also builds friendship and closeness to your buddies.

Then again so do things like jiu-jitsu, silat etc.

We play fight because its fun, had too much energy, we were boys and watched too much wrestling on t.v. The result is that you've got buddies that you can run around the streets with, bond from some street wrasslin' and do other sports like baseball, basketball and football.

It's more bonding than anything else. Sometimes you and your friends get into real fights over stupid stuff and it was like those crappy videos you see on the net with guys throwing haymakers at each other and rolling around like apes. That might prepare you for enemies, but noy the play fighting.

Team sports as a kid prepares you for enemies too. Sometimes a kid from the other team didn't like you for whatever reason and you both knew it, then you threw down and knew you could kind of handle yourself.
